No, that's actually a pretty legit objection

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-10-29 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, okay, sometimes even spooks when they need to be official will have logos and shit.

But yeah, most of the situations in AOS, the logo and advertising themselves is kind of stupid. (At least the main team doesn't seem to do this much?)
writerserenyty: (Default)

[personal profile] writerserenyty 2013-10-29 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, that's legit. That was a thing that happened a bit with Torchwood, too; for a super secret organization, people going "ah bloody Torchwood" shows just how bad they are at keeping it a secret.
sabotabby: (jetpack)

[personal profile] sabotabby 2013-10-30 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
But Torchwood were supposed to be incompetent.

Either that or I was seriously misreading the creative intent of the show, which I'll admit is a possibility.

Ahaha the first thing I thought of when I saw this secret was "bloody Torchwood!"

YOU KNOW WHAT ANNOYS ME JUST AS MUCH? Those fake magazines on Tumblr with interviews from the Avengers. I can see Tony, Steve and maybe Bruce or Thor giving interviews. But why the fuck would Natasha or Clint give interviews AND especially do photo shoots. They are spies and do undercover work. Pretty sure being on the cover of Time Magazine is going to make you noticeable.
cassandraoftroy: Natasha Romanoff from The Avengers movie, smiling slightly. (natasha)

[personal profile] cassandraoftroy 2013-10-29 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the notion there is either (a) after the Battle of New York, and all the inevitable YouTube videos from idiots with smartphones and no self-preservation instinct, their cover is pretty much already blown, or (b) Natasha's enough of a Master of Disguise that you won't recognize her anyway and if somebody manages to see Clint when he's on the job, he's already fucked up.

No, I agree; it bothered a lot of people, I think.

But I like the show and it's a minor annoyance, so I can forgive how unnecessary and silly it was.

i like to think that the team/cars we see are the "visible" / "hey, here, look at us, ha ha, we're not decoys, we promise" ones, and the actual for reals spy ones are blended in so well as regular people they don't even show up in the tv show

Oh good, I wasn't the only one with that objection. Because c'mon, you're supposed to be a secret organization! You can't just run around with the logo announcing yourself everywhere. Details matter.

That's... actually a damn good point. WTF, show?

For that matter, maybe they shouldn't drive around in a big black mini-van that just screams "government issued vehicle" (actually, are they government? well, still..).

This is reasonable.

Actually, the show is steadily improving so hopefully the show runners will notice stuff like that and stop it.

It's not weird. I feel the same.

However, I view it like I do the Bat Tracers from Batman: The Animated Series. Who would make a tracker that's not supposed to be found blink? The bat tracer blinks a bright red light. The animators and storyboard people on the show all admit it doesn't make sense. However, because it was a visual medium it felt better to represent the tracer with a blinking red light. And you know what? They're right. I imagine what they would be like if they were smaller black things and it doesn't speak to me the same way.

So yes, it a completely legitimate grip you have and I agree with you. However, the designers are probably ignoring the logic of it for the same reason the people on Batman made their tracers blink.

And probably not the unmarked black SUVs with tinted windows, either, on the grounds that if we're going to pick a government/shady agency car out of a line-up, I suspect most people will point at exactly those. I'd go with something inoffensive and family-sized in one of the standard colours, if I was doing undercover work.

Maybe people know a bit about Shield now? I mean they did help out the Avengers. So the name "Shield" might be know, but people don't know exactly what it is? Or think it's not a secret government organization?

But really, idk. It seems more of an aesthetic choice than people thinking about Shield and its secrecy.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The SUVs are more likely to be white than black, tbh. Or they drive around in a tan passenger van. I think Ford makes them special for government agencies, complete with coffee stains and chewed gum already smashed into the carpet so no one suspects the agency is wasting their budget on vehicles.

Oh, no, I definitely get what you mean. I have the same problem with other shows who have a sort of ham fisted approach to intelligence work.

Person of Interest? Made me keep banging my head against a wall, because jesus christ CHECK YOUR KEY ASSUMPTIONS John Reese you are making ROOKIE mistakes.

But yeah, the whole visibility thing short of shoots a whole in the "secret agency" deal. You at the very least don't roll around with your own patch hanging out. :/

On one hand I agree, on the other SHIELD is out in the open now, so they aren't that shadowy anymore so when they show up why not advertise it?

I don't think the team does it though as much as the random SHIELD agents that show up though? Or am I completely forgetting something?
ariakas: (Default)

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-10-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
In the movies, sure. But IRL unmarked vehicles belonging to an undercover organization are more likely to be a lot more subtle than ~ominously unmarked black SUV with tinted windows~ etc.

... Bloody Torchwood S.H.I.E.L.D.

I thought it was there for a reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
If someone shows up in conspicuously marked vehicle, they could either be the diversion or they could be establishing their authority and power to observers (like when they want to come in and take some alien artifact and don’t want to deal with the people that might have otherwise tried to stop them).

Of course, the helicarrier and the plane aren’t exactly the most inconspicuous looking bases.

Isn't SHIELD less a bunch of spooks (on that subject, where are all the black agents?) and more an instrument of control. They drive around in their cars with the big Godwinated S.uper S.erious style of eagle on it, reminding people who might be even slightly different "we're watching you, we're always ready to jail you...for eveeeeeeer!". Those SUVs are perfect instruments of oppression, just another drip-drip of fear in the barrel. Probably got the idea from the British Government's mini-vans.

Yeah.

I also have a lot of objections to Agents of SHIELD. The whole thing just seems... badly thought out.
