I see where you're coming from, but I also think there are a lot of kids -- especially younger ones -- who aren't developed enough yet to understand that role models can come in all shapes, sizes and sexes. They may feel like "here's a nice lady who wants to spend time with me, and that makes me happy," but how many will say "I want to be like her."

I don't know, but I would wager when it comes for looking at people to emulate, younger people are going to choose the ones who look like them. And that doesn't make interactions and lessons learned from women worthless. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that positive experiences get under the skin and hide out in the back of the brain for a while before being realized, for instance. But I think Big Brothers Big Sisters is more about the immediate effect, not the potential future effect.

I guess that makes sense. This is also making me wonder about trans* men and women, though.
