It could still be set in Denmark even though it doesn't look like real life Denmark. This wouldn't be the first time Disney went against actual environment and instead took dramatic license. I give you Pocahontas, where the real life incredible flat Jamestown, Virginia was given mountains that Pocahontas could turn up and down for dramatic reasons.

The setting for Pocahontas (minus coast) looked a lot more like West Virginia, TBH.

True.

I've been to Jamestown several times since I used to live less than an hour away in Virgina Beach. It's basically a swamp. And not a particularly interesting swamp. Certainly not a place where you can "paint with all the color of the wind." Eaten alive by mosquitoes? Yep. Jumping down random waterfalls? Nope.

There's a quiz on Sporcle where you have to guess the movie by its geographic inaccuracy. Most of the clues are about historical films referencing cities/countries/etc. that didn't exist at the time the movie was set. The Pocahontas clue is "This film features the majestic cliffs and mountains of coastal Virginia; they didn't exist 400 years ago, and they don't exist today either."

This has made me realize that somehow... I always thought Disney's Pocahontas was set on an island.

...huh.
