Well, googling pics of Denmark + Mountains seems to bring up pictures of white, snow covered mountain ranges in Denmark...so what exactly doesn't look like Denmark?

I doubt thouse mountains are actually in denmark.

Møllehøj is the highest natural point in Denmark at 170.86 m (561 ft).

(Maybe those mountains are in Greenland? I dunno.)

Denmark is flat, has no mountains and barely any snow... It is basically filled with fields, windmills and brick houses.

Norway. Sweden or Finland in particular looks a bit like how the picture in the secret looks...

If you are interested I can see if I find a picture from my window last winter to illustrate my point?

Only because Denmark actually doesn't have tall mountains. It could be inspired by any other scandinavian/nordic country though.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
this reminds me of the Isak Dinesen story (it might be "The Roads Round Pisa") where Count Schimmelhorn gets cornered by this Byronic young man (who is actually a girl) who, when she finds out that the count is Danish, says that she'd love to visit Denmark and see the cliffs described in Hamlet--the part about the "dread summit of the cliff/that beetles o'er his base into the sea." And Schimmelhorn can't bring himself to reveal that Elsinore is quite flat.

They've been pretty clear about the film's Norwegian influences in the architecture, landscape, the use of rosemaling, etc., so yeah I don't get this either.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-30 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Denmark where it actually takes place or are people just assuming it does because that's where Hans Christian Anderson is from? Wikipedia isn't naming a location, but says the landscapes were inspired by Norway and Wyoming. Obviously, then, it takes place in Wyoming and that is the end of the discussion.

It could still be set in Denmark even though it doesn't look like real life Denmark. This wouldn't be the first time Disney went against actual environment and instead took dramatic license. I give you Pocahontas, where the real life incredible flat Jamestown, Virginia was given mountains that Pocahontas could turn up and down for dramatic reasons.

How would I possibly know if it looks like Denmark as I've never been there? The closest I've come is writing my Master's thesis on Hamlet. Shakespeare doesn't spend much (any) time describing the landscape so, yeah, that could be Denmark in the picture.

I hate this pile of shit with a burning passion. "Hey, let's take a story with a predominately female cast and turn most of them into guys, because girls are hard to animate-And then we'll just change some stuff from the Rapunzel model and call it a day! High fives!"

Ugh.

If they at some point call that Denmark in the movie, I think I'll weep. This is almost like the whole Uppsala shebang that happened in Vikings again.

To be fair, it doesn't look like that all the time. Elsa's spell makes it look like that.

People throw the "it's set on Denmark" crap to excuse the all white cast. It's set on a fictional kingdom and it has nothing to do with the original tale it's "based" on.

If that is Denmark, then it is set in a time when Denmark still was Norways not so evil overlords, but Norway was still named Norway then, so I got nothing....

If you think that's bad, try watching "The Pathfinder" while living in coastal New England...

Denmark is flatter than my chest.

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-10-31 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't the highest point in that country a TV tower? Because I was watching Beowulf (the recent, really bad one) with a Danish friend and he burst out laughing when the opening shot was of majestic mountains.

It's funny; I've heard a lot of complaints about the movie, but terrible geography hasn't been one of them until now.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I heard the movie was supposed to be set in Norway...at the very least there are a bunch of Norwegians on tumblr saying that they are excited to have a movie set in Norway (or inspired by Norwegian culture). I'm pretty sure that the Disney film that supposed to be set in Denmark is The Little Mermaid.

I've been seeing a lot of hate for this movie which was amusing at first but is now kind of annoying tbh. I haven't seen it yet (since we still have a month before it's out) so I can't really say if it's good or bad one way or the other. I'll probably see it since two sisters are the main protagonists and I love stuff about sisters especially when that's the focus.

As far as the original fairytale goes, I'm disappointed but unsurprised that the Disney film is not being faithful. Disney has never been faithful to the original source material and each fairytale movie moves farther and farther away from the original story. Basically, I'm withholding judgment until I see it.

It's set in the (fictional) kingdom of Arendelle.

Which appears to be based mostly on Norway with some Canada and Wyoming thrown in.

"The production, art, lighting, and design leads needed to gather inspiration, so research trips were the next logical step. They sent the animators to Wyoming so they could get familiar with walking through snow."

"The lighting and art teams went to the Ice Hotel in Quebec, Canada to do some observations of how light reflects and refracts on snow and ice."

"The last trip was to Norway to get inspiration for the look of the film. They knew the story needed ice, mountains, water, and other elements that made Norway an ideal choice for inspiration."

"These trips helped to inform the look of the film, both in big ways and in small ones. You might see nods not just to the vast expanses of Norway, but also to the subtleties of the country’s architecture and even clothing style."

http://blogs.disney.com/insider/articles/2013/07/30/the-story-behind-the-story-of-frozen/

And, anyway isn't the Snow Queen's palace in Norway in the original story?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-31 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Epic movie Denmark has mountains. Real life Denmark does not. I always have to laugh when I see one of the old sagas that's supposedly set in Denmark on TV and there's this super dense, super high forest with deep ravines.
