Things everyone should know how to do

(Anonymous) 2013-11-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
We've had two different problems with fuses in my house within as many days so I've decided to try and teach myself how to fusebox this weekend. It's made me curious about what else I don't know how to do, so...

What do you think everyone should know how to do?

I think everyone should know how to take a little personal responsibility. And how to sincerely apologize.

That might be a little OT but I was trying to think of a skill that someone lacking would infuriate me and I wouldn't (or I guess couldn't) want to do on their behalf.

Pump gas. Apparently a lot of people can't do this. I understand why you might not know in states where they pump your gas for you, but in SC you have no excuse. Especially if you have been driving for several months. But amazingly two of my friends did not and I had to teach them. I have been pumping gas since I was like...12.

Cook at least one full meal (to impress company).

Car Stuff: Check the oil. Change a flat tire. Use jumper cables.

Cook basic things- eggs, potatoes, chicken, a salad dressing, maybe a steak (it's not the best to eat a ton of red meat and it's pretty pricy these days/outside the average student budget, but I think you should know how to best broil a nice steak), a basic quick bread/muffin recipe, a simple cake.

There are so many people my age who buy pretty much everything they eat pre-made. It's so much more economical to cook for yourself! I know everyone doesn't find it as much fun or relaxing as I might, but it's really not hard.

Also buying in bulk- buy a big family value pack of chicken legs and separate it out into however many you cook at a time, then freeze. A pack of 16 would be enough for 4 recipes of 4 each for me, and last me 3+ weeks rather than buying the little expensive packages every week.

How to start a fire. Basic first aid. Basic cooking/food prep.

I live somewhere where every year there's someone who gets lost in the woods and either comes close to or dies from exposure and not knowing anything about wilderness survival, so for my area I'd also add basic wilderness survival shit.

If you're a woman, know how to use a pad or tampon.

I have met the women who didn't. It was... interesting.

Grow potatoes (and spell "potatoes") cabbage, and apples. Just in general people should actually know how to grow some very basic foodstuffs. People should know how to make a basic soup too. Also learn how to get around without a GPS.

Be able to cook basic things. If you need me to teach you how to make scrambled eggs or steamed vegetables, I'm going to be wondering where the hell your parents were instead of teaching you these simple tasks.

Same thing with being able to sew simple repairs, like a ripped item or a button. EVERYONE should be able to do this. It's so easy to learn and you don't need to pay anyone to do it.

Also you need to be able to do your laundry, write a check, pay your bills, fill out a job application, and by 25 be able to know your liquor limits (if you've been drinking since 21 or younger). The latter one depends I guess, because peer pressure can be a factor in someone drinking more than they can handle. But if you are a grown ass man at a small family gathering, I am going to judge you if you barf on the carpet because you don't know when to quit.

Pump gas even if you don't drive. I learned to pump gas since I was old enough. Most time I likes it because it meant that I could use the window wiper thing. (Yes, that window wiper thing still amuse me at the age of 27)

Cook basic meals and maybe bake.

Learning how to pick veggies and fruits. Along with that check out all the little grocery places and compare prices. In my area, I got to one market to get all my veggies since their products are fresh. I go to another places in the same area to get good fruits. (Then again, I enjoy food shopping, I've no clue why)

Know how to sew on buttons and a basic hemline for pants at least. (If you know more that great)

Basic computer use and maintenance. How to keep essential stuff updated, restore an accidentally deleted shortcut, clear the browser history, install and uninstall a program, locate a file when search is not helping, open the case and blow the dust off the components without destroying anything, troubleshoot common simple issues, and remove garden-variety malware infestations without having to consult a professional.

There was a time when this may have actually been a bit much to ask, but in the age of Google there's really no excuse for a reasonably capable person not being able to figure this shit out.

Change a tire, change their oil, be able tell north/east/west/south from the direction of the sun, and sew a button/make minor clothing repairs.

Seriously, these are all things that take minutes to learn how to do, and will either save you tons of money in the long run (you're seriously going to throw out $100 jacket because of a tiny rip that would take you 5 minutes to fix? If time is money you don't make $100/hour, and you sure as shit don't make the $1200/hour necessary to make that a "waste of your time") or potentially save your life.

I feel so bad for my complete lack of cooking skills. I grew up in a house of pre-made foodstuffs for the most part, and neither of my parents could cook that well. So neither of my siblings can cook and neither can I. I also have what must be a kitchen curse, since I can exactly follow instructions on something simple like packaged chicken soup and things start burning. We aren't even going to touch the toaster.

That being said: banking, in general. Basic comprehension of taxes, debt, money in general. If you are at the store shopping you should be able to add up a rough estimate of how much what you're getting costs before you get to the checkout. I can't do calculus, but I know that if I have a twenty dollar budget for the trip and I have fifteen dollars worth of stuff that I can't pick up a four dollar thing because taxes would put it over.

How to cook! I'm so surprised it's a dying skill. I don't know many people my age and under who know how to cook something other than noodles or Kraft Dinner.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned unclogging a toilet.

Do simple arithmetic by hand, in case you don't have a calculator.

If you have a computer, turn the wireless off and on. Save files. Organize files. Turn the computer off and on again.

my housemates are in their late 30s to early 40s

neither of them can change a fuse or even flip the damn switch

it's frustrating, i'll come home to notes like "the power died in a storm today can you call the electrician"

and it's just a flipped switch or blown fuse we don't need an electrician i've shown you what to do you know i can fix it stop wasting money

and ok not everyone knows how to fix a toilet flush but most are a 3 part system, get the manual and work it out.

Caulking. I have caullked in three of the last five places I've lived because the kitchen sinks and bathtubs get left for so long not only is there black mold, but the caulk has dried up and is pulling away. Which creates access for water to seep into the wall, thereby creating mold INSIDE the wall. Now there's a pricey fix... My caulk jobs also look better than the one the landlords did in the fourth apartment.

Seriously, if I had my druthers, I would put that shit everywhere. xD

Other than that, learn to monkey around with stuff. I draw the line at electrical wires and garbage disposals, but I've learned how to do simple fixes in a toilet and a stove just by playing with stuff 'til it works again. I also think it's pretty fun!

In this day and age? How to fucking Google.

I understand it with older people or people who grew up without much technology, they're making the transition from going to live individuals for help instead of a search engine. But people my age and younger who grew up with their faces attached to a screen like I did, but are forever doing things like making new posts in a forum like "how do I change a light bulb/turn off the fire alarm/wipe my ass", I just. Why.
