OP, I've been RPing/writing for a long time, a hell of a longer than 2006 or whatever cred people are going for here, table top and online RP. And I can tell you that it is a lot different today. Like you say, it isn't fun. It used to be a friggin blast because no one cared if characters were original or canon. No one held a history of badly written characters against yours ~mary sue~. The story and the interaction was what counted. People weren't in it for their favorite canon character only, to hell with anyone else. There was enough room for everyone and no one gave you shit for expressing your opinion and no one thought they were better than you for preferring canon, or thought their writing canon characters was better than your OC.

I've seen enough shittily played and written canon characters I give these people no fucking credit when they complain about bad OCs/AU.

You'll probably be happier finding a small circle of like minded friends, or focusing on original writing like I did. It's far more gratifying, too, imo.

as someone who has been rping in various venues since the early 90s? no, it's really not any different. there were always elitists, there were always people who thought their character was so much better than yours, there was always talking behind people's backs and gossip and accusations of mary sues and godmoding and special snowflake syndrome and what have you.

anyone who thinks it's that different today has rose-tinted nostalgia goggles on. hell, some of the most vicious gossip and backbiting i've ever had to deal with was back in an aol chatroom rp circa 1996 or so. in the early 2000s i was part of a forum rp that ended up falling apart due to inter-player drama, and don't even get me started on tabletop stories.

Bullshit. RP circles are no more vicious and backbiting than they ever were. The only serious change is that opinions on OCs and canon characters have flipped - the flak OC players take now is the flak FC players used to take for being uncreative enough to use someone else's character rather than your own (and god help you if you filed the serial numbers off and got caught - and that's only on DW and similar platforms.

If you seriously think things were better ~back in the day~, you were either incredibly lucky, are wearing some heavy duty nostalgia goggles, or you didn't realize how elitist and vicious RPers can be because you were the vicious elitist, and have either mellowed the fuck out or fell in with a group where you were middle-of-the-road or lower.
