as someone who has been rping in various venues since the early 90s? no, it's really not any different. there were always elitists, there were always people who thought their character was so much better than yours, there was always talking behind people's backs and gossip and accusations of mary sues and godmoding and special snowflake syndrome and what have you.

anyone who thinks it's that different today has rose-tinted nostalgia goggles on. hell, some of the most vicious gossip and backbiting i've ever had to deal with was back in an aol chatroom rp circa 1996 or so. in the early 2000s i was part of a forum rp that ended up falling apart due to inter-player drama, and don't even get me started on tabletop stories.
