I sorta feel like the fact that people obsess on that still shows that they either see it as either rare (which is no fault of their's but of Hollywood in general) or because there are some out there (SJWs) who zero in on a characters categories above all else. Or they see homosexual relationships as something inherently 'unique'.

I'll never forget seeing a tumblr thing where slash fans were being all gross by making comments about how they love the forbiddenness of gay relationships and how they 'felt sorry' for het shippers because there was nothing "interesting" about their ships (and also confessing to stalking two boys at school because they "shipped" them as if the boys were fictional objects and not..yanno human beings. It reeked of fetishizing and such. Sorta offensive in the way calling a person of a different race 'exotic' would be.

Personally it would be nicer imo , if we could just be like "oh yeah...and there's a same sex relationship" like it's no biggie, because that would mean it is being treated as a common thing.

If this makes any sense. I know the last bit is hella idealistic but *shrug*

That whole middle paragraph was a giant wtf for me. I am so glad I only follow a small handful of tumblrites and so can avoid crazies like that.

Yeah.

I wonder when slash /SJW shippers will realize that not all attention / representation is good. Regardless of your intentions you CAN end up doing more harm than good. Funny how they sometimes trot out the "intent isn't magic" line when someone else makes an innocent mistake or asks a question they don't like.

Erm...Well. You do know that not all slash shippers do that, right?

Oh I know. I have friends who are slash shippers. I'm just talking about the ones who DO act that way.

Sorry if that didn't come across.

Lord, are we really conflating slashers, social justice warriors, and everybody who uses tumblr? o-O?

And I see plenty of WtNV chatter that has nothing to do with shipping. Gimme a break, everybody on this thread.

...RIGHT?! this thread is a microcosm of everything that i find unforgivably, embarrassingly stupid about current fandom_secrets.

Oh God, fetishists. I'm on a writing site where one of the writers does this same thing for black female characters--he puts them on a pedestal, making them be strong and tough and brave, but at the same time, he's very clearly interested in them in a physical sense to the extent that he completely neglects their inner lives. He tries so hard to make them fuckable that he can't also make them interesting. (When someone calls him out on this, he thinks they're racist or hate sex, and if he backs down, he blames his Asperger's.)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
O.o

Ohhhh boy *massages temples* .

That sounds like a nightmare, so much that even I would call them on that eventually. Especially because I hate hate HATE people using Asperger's as a "card" to excuse weird, stupid or obnoxious behavior.

Also... I really don't get people falling in love with a character of theirs with very little character going on. The one time I've really fallen for a character of mine (developed a small attraction / crush, like "if he was real I'd so date him") was after I developed him inside and out. I don't really get what's so "fuckable" about a cardboard stand up of a character with no inner life. I'll say what I've said before on a writing essay thing. ACTUAL PERSONALITIES ARE SEXY.

( "strong female character" types seem like a big ball of telling and not showing to me. I can't take them seriously because the author is so busy going "OH SHE'S SO STRONG" but they're never actually challenged. But when I see someone overcoming emotional stuff then I can take them seriously.)

Is he Chris Claremont?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ewww... seriously? I feel so sorry for those boys.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently they were trying to snap pics of them holding hands or walking together on their phone.

But yeah I agree. It was awful. I've heard other stories like that of real life shipping. These two girls who due to private personal reasons lived in the same house were harassed by this "friend" who shipped them, , refused to leave them alone and even bitched out the bf of one of them to get him to stop seeing her.

This is why I am uneasy about the idea of real life shipping. People are not fictional characters, people have emotions and the right to privacy and people have the right to not have someone shrieking at their SO and writing creepy porn of them. .
