I think that for the first four seasons, How I Met Your Mother was constantly teetering on the edge between enjoyable typical sitcom and Community-esque levels of narrative creativity. The two elements were mixed together in pretty substantial amounts. It toppled over firmly on the side of typical sitcom and descended into meh sitcom soon after, but dear god, such glorious potential in those creative parts.
