Shows you think are better than people give them credit for being

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So, those shows that people generally dismiss as being not super-brilliant or well-made -- run of the mill sitcoms or procedurals and the like -- do you know any that you think are a lot better/more creative/more interesting/more unique than they're generally viewed as being? Doesn't have to apply to everything about the show -- can just be a certain element of the show that you think was exceptionally well-done but overlooked.

The A-Team

Most fun I've ever had watching a show and I wish people wouldn't dismiss it as something not worth their time. It's worth your time if you like good-natured fun.

The A-Team is friggin awesome, and right in line with my other 80s faves. Knight Rider! MacGyver! The 80s knew how to do cheesy fun right.

Man the A-Team is such good fun, but as you've said people tend to dismiss it pretty quick.

I think a lot of the USA shows like Psych or White Collar get dismissed but they're really great at character development and continuity, which are things that I feel get ignored or shoved aside in a lot of tv shows.

thanks for this comment. Character development and continuity are much more important to me than plot, so I might have to check out some USA stuff!

white collar certainly should get more love.

I think that for the first four seasons, How I Met Your Mother was constantly teetering on the edge between enjoyable typical sitcom and Community-esque levels of narrative creativity. The two elements were mixed together in pretty substantial amounts. It toppled over firmly on the side of typical sitcom and descended into meh sitcom soon after, but dear god, such glorious potential in those creative parts.

The Law & Orders get made fun of a lot for ripping from the headlines so much, but I really like how the characters debate real-world issues as they're occurring IRL. It also makes for some interesting reruns.

+1 and they were best when they were straight procedurals, and the soap opera stuff was limited to little touches, and not the whole Benson/Stabler ... THING that they went into in later seasons. The less we knew about the characters, beyond the little touches, the better, imo.

the first 5 seasons of the mothership were critically acclaimed. deservedly so.

Not a show but a movie? Dirty Dancing. It gets billed as a romance a lot, but the romance wasn't the point in a lot of ways. It's actually pretty socially progressive even compared to modern movies (abortions! classism! the main character is privileged and naive and there are consequences!), or it gets dismissed because of things like the main character being named Baby (which isn't actually her name, btw.)

Basically I think people judge the movie for having a lot of dancing in it.

The Michael J. Fox Show. I don't care if there's nothing new about it; there's a reason the old sitcom cliches remain popular.

Revenge- I think if it was a male-centric show, it would be treated with alot more respect. It's a soap but there are plenty of soaps that get alot of respect.

I love Revenge, it's my guilty pleasure if only because I find it so ridiculous at times.

Star Trek: Voyager.

It's not super-duper amazing or anything, but people always seem to talk about it like it's soooooo incredibly dumb and I'm like... am I the only one who got anything out of that series or cared about the characters? I thought there was some really good stuff in that show, and I loved it.

You aren't. I might not go as far as saying it's my favorite but I've rewatched more episodes of Voyager than any other generation, it's the comfort food of the Star Trek universe for me.

It's probably my favorite Trek, which is why I'm not really involved in fandom at all. I poked my head in, saw all the people mocking and belittling Voyager and said nope. I'll just continue to enjoy the show on my own.

(Ok, maybe second favorite. Or at least tied with Next Gen.)

I think there are the VOY people and the DS9 people. Everyone likes TNG, to an extent, as far as I can tell.

Personally, I'm a DS9 fan and I've seen some episodes 5 or more times. But, I think do VOY has some good points and I think some if the VOY is a little unwarranted. It has the scariest ep of any Star Trek, imo. I really enjoyed the Doctor's character arc and, fuck the haters, I love Neelix.

DS9 is my favorite of the Trek series. Voyager is probably my second favorite, although I didn't care for it as much once Seven was involved. I mean, it's not that I dislike the character, but the first season she was on, even past the original story arc, it seemed everything revolved around her. The Borg are probably my least favorite Trek villain to begin with, so I was not so very pleased. I don't think I watched seasons 6 or 7, except for the finale, which made me want to kill things. (I'm also apparently the only person out there who loved Kes and was pissed off that she got killed off.)

I adore Voyager. It and DS9 are my favorite Treks.

Leverage

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that it's looked down on, but I think it's often overlooked. It's got a pulp-fiction lightheartedness as its overall feel, but deliberately and expertly so. It uses tropes SO effectively, every single damn season had an internal narrative arc and a satisfying conclusion, the acting was always good and often brilliant (Timothy Hutton keeps his Oscar in his fridge and has an underutilized gift for comedy), the episodes were damn solid all the way through...and it was FUN. And funny. And affecting. And, dammit, I'm mad again that my show didn't last a million years and there's hardly any fic. ㅜㅜ

Everything you said here, a million times over. I am so so thankful that I wasn't one of the people who overlooked Leverage, because it was just so amazing in every way.
