The Law & Orders get made fun of a lot for ripping from the headlines so much, but I really like how the characters debate real-world issues as they're occurring IRL. It also makes for some interesting reruns.

+1 and they were best when they were straight procedurals, and the soap opera stuff was limited to little touches, and not the whole Benson/Stabler ... THING that they went into in later seasons. The less we knew about the characters, beyond the little touches, the better, imo.

the first 5 seasons of the mothership were critically acclaimed. deservedly so.
