Online arguments in unexpected places?
(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)I go to Okcupid for random chatter with potential dates and maybe some random flirtation if I like somebody enough. Not this shit.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-02 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)Now, this guy was complaining how difficult Swedish was for him because he hated learning it. Boo-fucking-hoo. Passing Maths and Chemistry was always really difficult for me because I hated learning both but I sucked it up and got passing grades eventually. I can see many reasons why people find it unfair, but when some people basically just oppose it because it presented a minor challenge, I don't know, I get pretty irritated. I gained more from learning Swedish than I lost by having to learn it. (Note: it's not like you have to become fluent in it, you can pass with very minimal Swedish skills.)
"Privilege" is a little weird way of saying it, but yeah, it's not like Finnish speakers face language-related problems in their daily lives, whereas speakers of other languages might when living in Finland.
Re: Online arguments in unexpected places?
Practically every developed nation makes you learn a second language in school. Even if you somehow don't do that in high school most colleges in the U.S. require you take a foreign language.
Sometimes in wank threads people start arguing about random other wank.

Re: Online arguments in unexpected places?
(Anonymous) 2013-11-03 08:29 am (UTC)(link)I'm not a huge proponent of mandatory Swedish lessons in Finnish schools but I just hate people who think it's the end of the world that they had to learn something they didn't want to learn, instead of looking on the bright sides, like the fact Swedish is pretty easy to learn, and knowing it gives you employment opportunities in Sweden and elsewhere in Scandinavia. He was even annoyed the fact that our bilingual country occasionally has bilingual road signs. It's just like ..stop complaining. There are so many bigger issues.
Needless to say, I stopped responding to him after a while. Even if he had been cute, I really dislike people who have such a big chip on their shoulder about this issue.

Dude. It's a spooky radio show about a small town full of endearingly quirky characters. How are y'all so pissy all the time? JUST LISTEN AND LET IT BRING YOU JOY. :D
