Re: Non-fandom confessions

* homosexual

Are you from the US? Can you, in order to not sound incredibly condescending and right wing, use a word that actual queer people use? Because in the US, "homosexual" is 98% a word that naive or bigoted people use.

....?

I was under the impression that 'gay' was the insult of choice. I've heard 'that's so gay' and I've heard 'stop being gay' but have yet to hear homosexual used as an insult. It's a bit clinical, yeah, but I've never heard it used to belittle someone. And nobody I know has ever said anything to me about it.

Anybody else want to chime in here?

I remember something about a poll showing that when people were asked if they would vote in favor of "homosexual marriage" more people said no than if they were asked if they would vote in favor of "gay marriage". Homosexual is used a lot in contexts where the speaker wants to dehumanize the issue but I also think ayrt was being rudely nit-picky.

It occurs to me that if I had used the word 'gay' they would start yelling about that.

Kinda funny. I list three issues where I lean liberal and somebody accuses me of sounding right wing.

Hello, queer here and I find homosexual a DEEPLY LOADED WORD. It's a pattern of ignorance, and given the speaker's pretense of social liberalism, also deeply relevant.

Hello, queer here and I agree homosexual is a deeply loaded word outside of academic purposes and can be contextually quite offensive but it think it's quite apparent iceyred fell into the 'naive' category and genuinely didn't mean offense by it.

I posted this below, but I just got a response from a friend on facebook. He says that it is typically used by people who are speaking derisively. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be offensive or rude.

Ha, I just replied to you above saying I didn't get the vibe you meant it that way.

Lulz. Just saw that.

It's not the way I meant it, but apparently some people use it derisively. Either way, I'm just gonna use LGBT from here on out.

Gay is DEEPLY LOADED WORD. Everything is a DEEPLY LOADED WORD if you look hard enough.

Homosexual here and I fucking hate the word "queer". Surprise! No one person speaks for an entire demographic!

DA

And I agree with other anon. The word "homosexual" used in the way you did reads to me as either bigoted or just a huge generational gap. It's very...I want to say distancing, but I'm not sure if that fits. But you're right that "gay" can cause problems sometimes too, just in a different manner. "Same sex rights" or "same sex marriage" is a term that I've seen more people picking up.

I just looked through some friends' pages on facebook. They seem to use LGBT. But this is the first time I've ever heard that homosexual is offensive. I've messaged a couple of people I know asking their opinion on it.

I'm not sure I would call it offensive so much as telling? I can't recall ever seeing someone outright use it to offend someone but it is very jarring and usually indicative of some homophobia when someone refers to "the homosexuals" or someone as being homosexual in a casual conversation. The context you used it in didn't really read that way to me though?

You're so ignorant, even having spent time in liberal fandom.

This comment is bothering me so much but I can't parse why. The condescension? The irony? The pure bafflement? The idea that ~liberal fandom~ is some kind of divine educational tool? IDK.

Lol, that poster iceyred had no fucking idea what they were talking about.

I'm sorry

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-11-03 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
So I just got a message from a friend on facebook. He says, and I quote, "Unless you're speaking academically, it's typically only used by those who are less than friendly to the LGBT community, used with derision."

Sorry, guys. From here on out I'll use LGBT.
