I don't fault anyone for pirating because of this ridiculous region-locking crap. Companies love to scream globalism when it comes to getting rid of tariffs and moving money and facilities wherever they want at the drop of a hat, but when someone in Germany wants to watch The Daily Show, well, no, we can't have that!

Back when I was into anime, I loved me some Pirate Bay because the shows I wanted to see weren't available here. Not licensed, not available, the end. And no, I wasn't going to move to Japan to watch TV. My tastes have changed and now I'm lucky enough that my even my cash-strapped basic-cable self can get the shows I want legally for the price of sitting through commercials on hulu or comedy central or paying a reasonable price per episode or season on Amazon. When I got another laptop after my old one died, I didn't even install bittorrent. But it's all about access. If season 3 of Sherlock is shown in the UK with no legal option here in the US, bittorrent will be back on my computer.

You'll never get rid of piracy completely because some people will never pay for these things, even if they have the opportunity. Before the internet, they borrowed it from a friend or checked it out from the library. But I think most people would sit through commercials or pay a nominal fee per episode or for something like Netflix if they could. If these companies don't give people that option, then they don't have the right to complain, especially since they're not actually losing any damn money.

THIS. I'm just fine with sitting through Hulu commercials if it means I can watch shows for free legally. I've stopped downloading fansubs almost entirely ever since most anime companies started putting shows up on sites like Hulu or Crunchyroll or even their own website. I'm totally willing to pay small subscription fees if it means I can watch the things I want.

But if I can't access something legally? Damn right I'm going to pirate it. They can't complain if the option isn't even there.

God, THIS, so much!
