I also think it's a bad idea.

Specifically because of the timing. It's the Doctor's last regeneration and since it IS the last one, it's a bad time, narrative wise. You get one season of female 12 and then it ends, and she gets no further story. One regeneration is also not long enough for the Doctor being a woman to comfortably explore many situations related to the gender change unless they decided to focus the show entirely on that which would ruin it.

Suddenly flipping switches at the near-end of a series is a bad time. A spin off with a female lead would give much more time to develop a character and to do it justice instead of shoehorning it into the end for social justice reasons.

If the show is doing well when the actor wants to leave, they will find some way of getting around the restricted number of regenerations.

One that the fans will accept? I think if they tried that, the show would tank.

My guess is the majority of current fans are more invested in having more Doctor Who than they are in maintaining the integrity of the canon.

Considering there is canon for Time Lords being able to get more regenerations - the Master comes to mind - the fans would probably cope.

But they can get more regenerations? Like, River gave the Doctor all of her remaining regenerations?

The people who are writing Doctor Who have no concern whatsoever for people who are sticklers for canon. They're making a 50th episode that only celebrates the last 8 years. Even if Who canon didn't change all the time anyway there's certainly nothing to dissuade anyone from doing it now.

Well yeah, they had River give him all her lives like last season or something.

We have that. It's called Torchwood. Torchwood has Gwen on it as the second lead.

Why does everyone ignore Gwen? Is it all the superfluous vowels? Do you have something against the Welsh?

Primary lead, not second lead.

Gwen is "a lead" but not "the lead," not in the way the Doctor is.

Jack was fucked by enough men to qualify as woman too.

Wow.

You know what, that deserves a round of applause. *claps*

He's also been pregnant, more than once. So screwed by guys, swishy coat, been pregnant, weird romantic fascination with the Doctor but was overlooked in favor of Rose, was stuffed in the fridge by the Daleks for pathos. Yeah, girl.

ayrt

I realise Gwen exists. That's good. More characters like that would also be good. I didn't mean to imply it doesn't happen, but that OP should be hoping for more of those rather than switching up the Doctor's physical gender for one regeneration at the very end of the show, for the reasons cited.

And a lot of people (myself included) dislike Gwen. She's annoying to me because she acts less as female lead and more of a "companion" type character that makes googoo eyes at the main lead dude that travels through time and space.

Also the Sarah Jane Adventures. idgaf that it's a kids' show. Sarah Jane is awesome.

Actually, we also had the Sarah Jane Adventures and was pretty much as awesome as DW. It would still be ongoing as well if not for Liz Sladen's death.

12 regenerations = 13 Doctors though...

Re: I also think it's a bad idea.

ha ha and what are the chances of them going for 2 female regenerations in a row.

Re: I also think it's a bad idea.

O_o You honestly think the series is going to end after 12? Really? Unless the ratings tank, they'll find a way around it.
