I don't agree with his reasoning, but I don't want a female Doctor either.

But the show should definitely consider bringing back Romana.

A female Doctor is such a stupid a terrible idea. Theres no way a show like Doctor Who can acurately represent a man inside a woman's body, it would be such a trainwreck.

It looks to me like some people are forgetting that the Doctor is a man. This isn't like having a PoC Doctor, we are talking about transgender issues here. We can't have a woman playing the Doctor and pretend that the character is now a woman, because the Doctor would still be a man.

I'm not sure why everyone is so hell-bent on the Doctor being a woman. There would be absolutely no pleasing the fanbase, especially the social justice crusaders. It would be a catastrophe. She would never be good enough.

Yeah that's a dumbass thing to say. Would be better to just come out and say that he doesn't want a female Doctor.

What gets me about this whole thing is that this is possibly the only show that has this opportunity. The character gets to change their entire appearance every few years. They have SO much liberty with what they can do!

It'd be like if the TARDIS only ever traveled to one place in on decade. It would be such a wasted opportunity considering it can travel through all of space and all of time. That's what's fun about the show; the almost endless possibilities. But when it comes to the character of the Doctor? The only variation they go with is age. How gutsy.

I personally hate the idea of a female Doctor, and I don't think it's sexist. I just want at least one thing about the character to stay consistent, since nothing else does. :/

Also I love Neil Gaiman, but I really think he should have stayed silent on that issue, especially because his reasons were bullshit. If there's going to be a female Doctor, now would absolutely be the time. (I still don't want one, though.)

It's like complaining that there isn't a female Sherlock Holmes instead of trying to create an equally kickass female protagonist.

Specifically because of the timing. It's the Doctor's last regeneration and since it IS the last one, it's a bad time, narrative wise. You get one season of female 12 and then it ends, and she gets no further story. One regeneration is also not long enough for the Doctor being a woman to comfortably explore many situations related to the gender change unless they decided to focus the show entirely on that which would ruin it.

Suddenly flipping switches at the near-end of a series is a bad time. A spin off with a female lead would give much more time to develop a character and to do it justice instead of shoehorning it into the end for social justice reasons.

The right time for a female doctor will be when it is off the air and as a parody only. Just like the last time.

Agree with most of the above commenters. It's not the same as saying 'I think it's about time we had a female captain of a starship on Show X' or 'I think it's about time we had a female chief of police on Show Y'; the Doctor is a person, not a position, and if he's gone through the last twelve bodies as a male I think it's safe to say he considers himself male. Plus even if they did have a female Doctor they'd probably do it really badly.

Also tbh, I'd much rather have a discussion about the Doctor being a man of color. Because like... there hasn't been a recurring POC on the show since 2008.

Another thing that warrants a discussion, imo, is the fact that there has only been one female writer in the New Who era (and only one in the Classic Who era iirc), and I don't think a person of color has EVER written an episode of Doctor Who.

It's not that the world isn't ready for a woman in a role LIKE the Doctor, and that's not what Gaiman said.
If the Doctor were to regenerate into a woman it would fundementally change the nature of the show and open a gigantic can of gender worms. Would such a regeneration turn the Doctor into a woman? If so, we'd get uncomfortable gender determinism on top of a fundamental change in the lead charter.
Ok, so maybe they're smart and the Doctor regenerating as female would make him either a trans man or a-gendered or genderqueer or some sort (I'm all for this)? If so, trans issues would need to be treated carefully and delicately, and it's almost impossible to show trans issues on TV without either devolving into a bunch of icky stereotypes and throwaway jokes, or making the whole show a Very Special Message about trans issues.

So I agree with Gaiman, it is not time for the doctor to regenerate as a female bodied person. This has nothing to do with women, and everything to do the fact that I don't need to see a beloved character turn into a derogatory trans stereotype in the name of misguided progressiveness.
