Wow that sounds really horrible of her o.o
That statement left me kind of confused because it's like "so...what are they saying that you can't write from a point of view of someone different because you've never been there? Because...uh....that kind of makes it hard to write about anything but what you are.
I might be misunderstanding that bit, it just left me a little confused. Sorry for bothering people with it.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-06 05:05 am (UTC)(link)I think it was more referencing how people write different groups as if they really were a part of it and get credit for it instead of writers who are part of those groups getting any recognition. For example, a gay man is gonna know much more about male gay culture than a straight man or woman ever will. Even if the straight people research it heavily, they'll never really live it. It doesn't mean they shouldn't ever write outside their own personal demographic, but rather to be careful and actually do heavy research and really consider it instead of writing what they /think/ different groups experience. It's become a nasty habit for people to write shit they really don't know anything about and then get defensive when their ignorance is pointed out.
