Well, it'd help if we knew what the 'good' versions were.

Likely the American iteration of the G1 cartoon, since IDW is a G1verse, this is English language not Japanese, and if it were the Marvel, Dreamwave, or fan club comics, they'd almost certainly already be quite clear on the 'different universes are different' thing and know 'this isn't the iteration I like' doesn't mean 'this is a misinterpretation'. (Though there is a vague possibility they read one of the comics without ever seeing the cartoon, or reading any of the other comics before IDW, that strikes me as 4 million kinds of unlikely.)

I wouldn't know either way about this discussion, I've never read any of the comics. Except Reign of Starscream but I don't think that counts.
