I am so, so glad this is happening.

Four for you, Marvel Comics!

Imagine if DC had done this. They have her do a season arc where she struggled to reconcile her religion and her superpowers. Then they'd fire the writers before the last issue and have her suddenly become a baptist.

How many days has it been since DC last did something stupid, lets check:

Almost a month.

That long?

There's a similar counter for Marvel but it hasn't been updated in months. I think the Outhousers may be a bit biased... then again, DC has been doing stupid shit on a regular basis since Dan Didio took office.

I swear Didio is only kept around for the pun value of his name. DC is seriously stupid right now. I say that as a former DC fangirl too. Now if I pick up a comic it's a Marvel title or 2000AD and not DC. I don't know what would get me back to reading DC now. Okay, that's a lie. It would be a Batfamily makeover. Bring back Damien, make Robin Steph again, cripple Babs and stick her infront of a computer, and lets have a Batwoman gay marriage.

Of course marvel has just done Something Stupid too with its X-Men title. God but I hate Captain Boring.

I'm kind of glad Damien is gone, I never really liked him much and Grant Morrison kind of always planned for him to die.

I'm of two minds about Babs getting uncrippled. I love that she was rescued from being thrust into useless obscurity and made into a breakout disability superhero -- most of my exposure to Babs has been with her as Oracle. I'm glad to see her back in the saddle again as Batgirl, but I strongly question the way they went about it. The 2011 reboot would have been a decent excuse to erase the whole Killing Joke fiasco from continuity entirely (I like TKJ but that's in spite of what they did to Babs) and possibly have avoided any controversy over Babs being ~MAGICALLY UNCRIPPLED~ (ugh.)

I thought the Killing Joke worked well with her being cripped. It was a footnote in someone else's story. That is what happens to most of the folks who get put in wheelchairs in the real world. Some fucking asshole is too busy concentrating on his fucking life, and making everything all about him and stops paying attention and then you have to live with the effects of his mistakes. That is how most people end up in a wheelchair if it isn't congenital or old age. That they created this character that actually resonated with real world experiences and still made it into the superhero clubhouse, that was DC's moment. Then they told wheelchair users to fuck off as they didn't want dirty cripps reading their comics. Assholes.

I like your take on it, but I honestly think your view is colored by what Babs eventually became. It was pretty clear to me that DC had no intention of doing anything with her until Kim Yale and John Ostrander decided to rescue her from obscurity and redevelop her.

I love the way they talk about the concept of the book:

The writer added that Ms. Marvel will be “about the universal experience of all American teenagers, feeling kind of isolated and finding what they are” but “through the lens of being a Muslim-American” with superpowers.

I love that because it's exactly what the Marvel idea of a comic book has always been. It says to me that this is not just there to bring in a female audience. It says that telling these kinds of stories is exactly what Marvel should be doing and that it makes complete sense for Marvel to do this because telling these stories is what Marvel does and has always done. That there's a recognition that this is just as much the archetypal Marvel experience as Spiderman is. That the themes and the experience - the themes that Marvel is built around - are just as present and just as valid and universal whether it's a story about a Pakistani girl or a nebbish from Queens. The story is different, the person is different, but it's still a story for everyone. And the Marvel story is a story about everyone.

Plus it gives me hope that they're not going to totally fuck it up.

They'll fuck it up, they're Marvel, it's what they do. But at least they try harder at not alienating fucking everyone than DC. Which is a shame because DC's best stories far outstrip Marvel's. (And DC's worst stories are better than Marvel's worst, too.)

Boooooo, Marvel forever

I'm sure it won't be perfect, but hardly anything is. I still really like that they're trying, and (it appears) trying seriously.

You have no idea how much it pains me as a DC fan that DC has been doing so poorly PR-wise. I wish they would stop fucking up so bad, because I love DC to fucking death (especially B and C listers like Booster Gold) and I think the creative teams, the fans and comic readers in general deserve better.

DC's editorial board is repeating a lot of the same mistakes Marvel did in the 90s. I'm hoping this will go away in a few years.

I definitely agree with that (even if I do prefer Marvel). I think both companies being good is good for the whole industry.

It really is just the same mistakes endlessly reduplicated. It's kind of infuriating in a way that they just can't get their shit together.

That cover is gorgeous! I don't read too many comics but might give this a shot. Hopefully it turns out amazing, but no matter what good on them for going with something different.

...come on DC, give us the real Batwoman back. Rehire Williams and Haden

/sad over the only comic I actually truly enjoy consistently

What happened with Batwoman? I haven't read it in a while.

Re: THE NEW MS. MARVEL!

I'll probably summarise it incorrectly, so here's the first link I could specifically find about it:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/09/05/jh-williams-iii-walks-off-batwoman-over-dc-not-allowing-her-marriage-to-maggie-sawyer/

and I've dropped out because the two reasons I even read it (an amazing artist and a consistent writer) have dropped out. I liked reading self contained stories with an attractive art style and with it gone... then there's the reasons they left with the forbidden storylines and editorical changes...it's an angry, frustrated clusterfuck. They don't even get to tie it up in the November issue, it's bam! new artist/writer and I always find that jarring and unpleasant
