purposefully manipulate their emotions

This is called parenting.

Seriously, though. If you think this is the height of parental cruelty you had a fortunate childhood.

Who said it was the height of parental cruelty? It's still a shitty, objectionable, non-nice thing to do.

it might not be the height of cruelty, but it's still unnecessary, especially if the child is very young. My dad used to play fairly cruel practical jokes on me and the result was that I still don't trust him :\

I wouldn't say it's the height of parental cruelty but I do believe that it comes across as highly immature for a parent to do.

jfc no-one thinks it's the height of cruelty, just that it's a shitty thing to do to a kid.

yeah...literally nobody here actually said that.

How the hell is this parenting?

you think that's cruel, how about the HOLOCAUST

seriously... bad logic. It might not be serious, might be forgotten about in several minutes, but it models bad behavior, is petty and mean, and minor or not, it's still bad parenting.

It's the kind of teasing I would role my eyes at if the parents just did it to joke around with the kids. Putting it on YouTube suggests that they're just using the kids for internet fame.
