sorry I ate all your candy

(Anonymous) 2013-11-06 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Now that halloween's come and gone, my friends are all laughing over the annual "tell your kid you ate their halloween candy and videotape their reaction" thing, and idk, it just really rubs me the wrong way. It just seems unnecessary and cruel to lie to your kid and purposefully manipulate their emotions, saying things you know will upset them, and then laughing at their reaction for a minute of fame? And people are like 'wow those kids are being so bratty!' and yes they are, but they're children, some of them are like three or four years old, and you're telling them you ate their candy without asking, and then rubbing it in by saying "oh but it was so yummy" or whatever and ughhh those videos just make me so mad! Everyone I know seems to love them so I just wanted to rant somewhere. So what do you guys think of them?

I hate those videos for the same reasons. I have no respect for adults who think they're being funny or clever by playing a joke on a child that upsets the child so much that they cry. For a parent to do that to their child is disgusting to me.

It's a silly prank. Is it mean? Yeah. Is it overly cruel? No. (Though my heart did break for that girl in the La La Loopsey pajamas. I wanted to hug her and buy her all the candy she could carry.)

Not bothered. These are not kids who will be scarred for live -- or even a minute once it's all said and done.

I don't think most if any of them will be scarred for life, either, but it's still an asshole thing to do for twenty seconds of internet fame.

Not scarred for life, but definitely more than a minute. It may be in a small way but you're breaking your kid's trust.

I think they're sick. I do not understand provoking human misery for laughs. If I ever have a kid and do that, I will not be surprised if I'm the first one on their serial killing spree.

Ugh.....I agree.

Also I don't really see it as 'bratty'. Young kids sorta depend on their parents, and if their parents are lying and manipulating them for fame on the internet, then the parents are at fault.

The kids are acting in a way that is realistic and understandable for their age, if anything , the adults doing this are the ones being bratty. "hey I'm just going to tell you a lie I KNOW will upset you and then record you to the word when you get upset and possibly tease you even further. All for the sake of a meme. And I'm the adult here"

Yeah, I mean, if it were a fourteen year old who started crying.... okay. But of course a four year old's going to be upset by that.

This is a thing?? Ugh. Obviously there are worse videos on Youtube but this just seems mean.

I think that's a shit thing to do. What exactly are you teaching your child? That you will purposefully hurt their feelings? That they shouldn't trust you? That it's okay to steal and basically break all of the other rules you taught them about how to treat other human beings? Stupid, asinine "parenting."

Yeah, I don't think it's really a good idea to prank your kids like that. They remember shit like that, and before you know it you're old and decrepit and tied to a stretcher and the house is burning down. WHO'S LAUGHING NOW, DAD? WHO'S LAUGHING NOW?!

Re: sorry I ate all your candy

(Anonymous) 2013-11-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's pretty much a douche move, and I think people who think it's funny are projecting their hatred of bratty kids onto kids they don't even know, so how do they know the kids are bratty? Because they're under the age of eighteen?

I only realized this was a thing this morning and I agree that it's pretty dickish. The kids will get over it, I know this, and there's nothing wrong with a prank now and then as long as they're harmless, but it rubs me the wrong way.

I detest those vids. ANY kind of vid like that. I know there was one for a while that was a young teen being told she had super-fab tickets to...something she really liked. Hannah Montana or something? And then her mom was all 'jk, lol' and the poor girl was inconsolable.

I can't imagine doing that to my kid, ever, and certainly *not* taping it and showing it to the world. Cruel and unnecessary.

Agreed, that's absolutely a dick move and just makes me feel bad for the kids.

tbh I think those videos are hilarious, and besides the best parts are the kids who DON'T freak out and say stuff like "It's okay, love you mom." so cute!

I answered my three year old, asking for breakfast: "No, not today. We're never eating breakfast again." and watched two enormous tears grow and grow until they kind of filled the room. NOT a good joke, mum. I'm still apologizing for that one, years and years later. Kid will tell the grandkids of the time granny was really, really bad, I'm sure of it.

purposefully manipulate their emotions

This is called parenting.

Seriously, though. If you think this is the height of parental cruelty you had a fortunate childhood.

I don't like that trend at all. It feels very unkind to hype up a kid about getting candy, help them dress up, help them get their candy - then tell the kid you ate all their candy without asking?! It's just a kid, that's not funny at all

I COMPLETELY agree with you anon. I'm glad it's not just me. Making your kid cry and feel horrible (because let's face it, when your four, unless something horrific can happen to you, that's pretty much the worst thing that can happen) for your own entertainment is squicky and awful to me. Plus in a way, it's their stuff. When you're that age, not many things are yours...but your Halloween candy is. Nothing made me feel more...violated? that's a really strong word, but nothing made me feel more like a boundary had been crossed as a child than when my parents did something to my stuff in front of me. It didn't happen often and never like that, and it wasn't for entertainment, but I can't imagine how I would have felt if it had been. yuuuuuuck.

ETA: wow, it's REALLY not just me. Faith in humanity, partially restored...

It's not so much the prank as it's the fact that they are putting videos of their kids on the internet (without the children being able to object to it) that I find more than questionable. Especially in the age of cyberbullying.

that's really mean to do that to a kid, and i don't even like kids but i would never steal even one piece of a kid's Halloween candy. candy is VERY important to a kid.

Ugh, it pains me to agree with Melissa from Shakesville on anything, but I think it's amazingly mean-spirited.
