I COMPLETELY agree with you anon. I'm glad it's not just me. Making your kid cry and feel horrible (because let's face it, when your four, unless something horrific can happen to you, that's pretty much the worst thing that can happen) for your own entertainment is squicky and awful to me. Plus in a way, it's their stuff. When you're that age, not many things are yours...but your Halloween candy is. Nothing made me feel more...violated? that's a really strong word, but nothing made me feel more like a boundary had been crossed as a child than when my parents did something to my stuff in front of me. It didn't happen often and never like that, and it wasn't for entertainment, but I can't imagine how I would have felt if it had been. yuuuuuuck.

ETA: wow, it's REALLY not just me. Faith in humanity, partially restored...

I think you really hit the nail on the head here with the whole ownership thing. For a child, personal property is a tenuous proposition, because you don't have the power to earn your own money and buy your own things, and your parents have the authority to take away your things for punishment/discipline. So when something that is explicitly meant to be "theirs" is taken away for no reason without their knowledge or consent, it's going to make them feel upset and threatened and powerless. This whole Halloween candy prank is a horrible joke to play on anyone who is completely dependent on another person, the way that a child is.
