What is wrong with people?

Burning Twin Towers costume: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/trending-now/outrage-over-burning-twin-tower-halloween-costume-worn-by-teens-in-the-uk-194727599.html?vp=1

Boston Marathon victim costume: http://news.yahoo.com/photos/boston-marathon-bombing-victim-costume-photo-1383499499888.html

It’s like some people don’t have any sort of understanding for how people might feel seeing these costumes. Honestly, though, the reactions (the death threats) are also completely messed up.

Agreed. I get the feeling that costumes like that where you'd have to have been under a rock to not understand how controversial and offensive they'd be are just used for pure shock value.

They WANT people to notice them, and the negative attention is still attention to them.

the boston marathon girl actually said in not as many words that she doesn't think she did anything wrong.

Of course, she COULD be lying. But it's also possible she's just an idiot. or she's one of those people who resists the PC movement to the point where nothing is off limits.

Especially as this isn't the only controversial costume. I think it's a "thing" this year. :/

Of course, I do think there are people who just don't... think. It's not that they wanted to be controversial, it's that they just didn't consider ... anything. They thought "oh, this might be funny" and that's it.

I agree these are shitty and should not be done.

I also don't agree with all the death and rape threats that these people (Well, Boston Marathon girl) received after being plastered all over the Internet.

As much as I feel like public shaming should be done, I feel like it should be done within their community and not on the Internet. just seems like too much for me - death/rape threats aside and the fact that I kinda feel it's a little overkill, these people don't deserve spotlight for being assholes.

eh it's not cool, but I'm more uncomfortable with the faces of the twin tower teens being plastered over a news website about it. Since it's such a controversial topic I'd worry someone would ID them and get them into serious trouble. Granted they're 19 and should probably know better, they're still young and stupid so it's not something I'd want them to get hurt over...

Sounds like they've been ID'd.

Yeah, I see now there names are up. They've apologised at least but, urgh, it just gives me the creepy crawlies when they internet gets kinda lynch mob-y over something like this - offensive but really rather minor. Not like they're throwing dogs of highway bridges or something

idk it's just D: to me but I'm probably just being overly concerned.

I'm a little perplexed that the twin towers costume won a prize when the costumes were labeled.

Prize for most offensive costume maybe.

A classmate told me of plans to do a twin tower costume with a friend of hers complete with plane in October 2002, and this was on the US east coast. I don't know what facial expression I made, but she said something along the lines of "Oh, do you think people will think it's too soon?" (not ironically or in a baiting way, just... wondering, like it had occurred to her before, but... nah, it shouldn't be a problem.) She seemed to rethink it then, but no idea if either of them went through with it. But yeah, sometimes you can roll with your worst impulses without even knowing it. (I mean, if no one at the Boston Marathon costume woman's workplace said anything, and someone there was cool with taking her pic, and so on...)

Actually, I heard Boston Marathon girl was fired from her job.

True, but it hasn't been clear if it was strictly the costume (and I'd expect more of a "pull aside and reprimand/request she change" scenario if that were the case) or if it was the backlash and negative publicity, and any rl harassment her employers had gotten.
