Someone has to, I guess. I was feeling a little sorry for her but the more we find out, the more I can't stand her. Especially after this week's ep.

This. I hate how she's going to be redeemed while it looks like they're making Marie the villain. There's something fucked up about that.

I still fucking love Kathy Bates though.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I "like" her about as much as I like the rest of the characters, in a disturbed :/ kinda way. Really there for the stories XD but I don't hate her (yet?)

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The show seems to be working hard to make her sympathetic, but that would probably work better if they didn't keep cutting those moments with scenes showing her doing stuff like pulling someone's eyes out their sockets while they're still alive. lol And did she actually lock her daughters up in tiny cages for a year for something? She's a pretty repugnant character (don't even want to imagine what the real person was like. I'm assuming they're exaggerating for dramatic effect, but maybe not), if well played by Kathy Bates, so I think I'll reserve my sympathy for her apparently many, many, many victims. But more power to those who can find things to love about her.

Well a lot of the stories about her are pretty horrible... with one person she broke their limbs and refastened them in such a way that the person became a 'human crab' for example.

"I'm assuming they're exaggerating for dramatic effect."

Why would you assume that. That's my problem with this country and it's understanding of what really happened to black people under slavery. This woman is just one of the more known and notorious in her sadism, but there were plenty of her kind who did the same - she just happened to get discovered and exposed in her doings.

That's why I have a serious problem with any kind of play for sympathy of the part of the writers. Why are they trying to make a sympathetic character out of a real life monster who actually killed and tortured real life people ? I'm don't like this season.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Well I can buy that the real life person tortured and brutalized people, especially slaves, since I've read the stories (not hers), but this one also pulls out people's eyes and insides for fun while they're still breathing and gives them minotaur heads. Was that also part of the pathology of the real life woman too?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Most of the victims had been severely maimed by medical experiments. Some were even strapped to tables. One man had been surgically transformed into a woman, and a woman looked like a human crab. Her arm and leg bones had been broken and reset into odd angles, and she was kept in a small cage. Another woman's arms had been amputated and her skin was peeled off in an odd sort of spiral pattern. Author Victor Klein, also a New Orleans native, indicates that scattered around the room were pails full of body parts, organs, and severed heads. Among those who had died were males whose faces had been grotesquely disfigured."

White people in this country are seriously tone deaf when it comes to their understanding of the depth of the depravity of what really happened to black people under slavery in the United States. The only reason she's known now is because she got caught and discovered.

The fact black people in America are still suffering under the after-effects of slavery and more recently, Jim Crow, and a TV show can be written about a historic and real person who actually killed real people can be depicted in any way as any kind of sympathetic figure is kind of really sickening.

The only hope I have for this season is that in the end, she is not "redeemed" in some way and actually gets what she really deserves, which is eternal hell. otherwise, vomit.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
lol a hundred years from now they'll still be blaming slavery for their problems

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Because institutional racism totally doesn't exist and that whole Civil Rights thing totally solved everything.

No, they'll be *rightly* blaming the institutionalized, systematic racism that still continues now and has never been addressed or fixed, and white racist like you will be proud in their blissful ignorance of knowing nothing about history and how it effects things in the present and smugly proclaim how "they" will complain about slavery while ignoring the blatant racism going on in the present... will smug racist, you ...

is this something surprising or new?

So true ...

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, she's probably going to be redeemed.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
i don't give a fuck if people like her, in fact it's kind of refreshing that fandom has rallied around a woman woobie. but folks can't be surprised if other fans are revolted by and hate her. madame laluarie is more than some fierce, misunderstood character to rally around.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. This is not a female character being vilified for being too girly or for drowning a cat: it's someone who's out and out detestable.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
or for drowning a cat

that isn't enough to be vilified for?
