Yes to the After School Specials. I call that "story time" when people do that because they talk down to you.

That's not just a fanfic thing. I think I've read three books in the last year that had self-insert political screeds. The last one introduced a character bitching about divorce law, and moved on to him introducing a feature of the fantasy world by bitching about income tax law.
