Things in fic that make you want to hit the back button

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-11-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Old topic is old, but there are always little things I discover I hate ever so often.

Like, casual mention that a character was a prostitute some time in the past. ("Dean turned a few tricks to keep Sammy fed," for example.)

What about you guys?

Original characters.

Unless I'm actively looking for awful fic, which happens more often than not.

Major Character Death. Instant back button. Genderbends that are not prewarned. First person POV.

First-person narrative. It's usually so bad and even if it isn't I get so helplessly embarrassed.

Unless the fic was directly recced to me and then I wince, suck it up and give it a chance.

Not to start that wank again or anything.

Bad writing that goes nowhere, really :/

I guess I'm not all that picky about fic if it's written properly and catches my interest right away.

Dialogue a character would never say. Sometimes it's a matter of British English versus American English not matching the source (and I feel kind of bad about that) but sometimes it really is just like "No. Those words would never come from that person's mouth. GO BACK."

Also, if I feel like I'm reading somebody's thesis on on -isms or regurgitated medical pamphlets.

Surprise kinks that I don't like
infidelity that's not warned for
characters being so OOC that I get embarrassed

Surprise character bashing. I remember it well from my youth in the HP fandom when it was suddenly 'in' to hate Ron (and maybe Dumbledore).

Also, even if the summary was really excellent, there is still nothing in the world that will ever make me read a story without paragraph breaks. It is literally the quickest thing I use to determine if I'm going to back button out of there. Learn how to format people.

When it starts with "The first time [character] did/din't [verb]..."

I swear it's like a formula that every mediocre writer uses to start their (usually one-shot)fic.

I hate it when characters like another character they canonically dislike in a fic. Like, say Character A from whatever show repeatedly says Character B is annoying, acts irritated by them- if I open a fic and Character A acts like Character B is a funny, great guy/girl or something, with no explanation, I just can't read the rest of the fic (no matter how much I might like Character B).

Oh god, another thing. I fucking hate most present tense narration. People are so BAD at it. If I read the first sentence and it's all present tense I'm probably backing out. I automatically assume it's going to be shit. I've been burned too many times. I know a total of one fan author who can make it work.

When I read a fic that's tagged character A/B but it turns out to be all about A/C until character B shows up. Character bashing and fridging. No paragraph breaks.

Cultural mixups. Like Japanese anime characters celebrating the fourth of July. That's kind of a glaring example, but just common sense stuff. I can get over small things if it's one of those, why would the author think to look it up in the first place, but blah.

Re: Things in fic that make you want to hit the back button

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"somehow".

It CAN be used correctly, but more often than not it's laziness on the part of the author. If you don't know how something happened, you need to go back and rewrite until you figure it out.

If the rest of the fic is good I might just roll my eyes and move on.

Original Characters as main characters without warning

and

Story is suddenly all romance and sex but wasn't advertised as such

(basically I wanna read what the summary says I'm going to read and not be blind sided with a story/character change)

Present tense.

Second-person POV.

Awful writing goes without saying but sometimes it's so mind-bogglingly awful that you wonder if this person is still in grade school and hasn't gone through grammar class yet. Things like putting two different characters' dialogue in the same paragraph, lack of paragraph/line breaks, complete lack of punctuation, misspelling character names, etc. The dialogue thing kills me every time.

Any fics that are labelled A/B but there are mentions of other A or B pairings or weird shippy moments with other people.

Unwarned for character death. (I was reading a great fic a few months ago and in the last chapter half my OTP died out of nowhere. My friend had died that morning and I'd been reading the fic because I thought it was going to have a happy ending. Nope.)

Fics where it feels like the author and all the characters are looking down on anyone who doesn't share their 'progressive' open relationship values. (Literal example from a fic: A/B are together, and C/D are together. D isn't completely comfortable with C dancing, flirting, sitting naked in a hot tub with, and receiving expensive gifts from B. D is painted as if being uncomfortable with any of this is him being irrational and jealous.)

A character who, in the show, is fairly badass and maybe emotional but not a woobie suddenly *crying* and *emoting* and basically falling to bits over a hangnail or something. I hate that.

I also don't like fic that can't keep its own internal timeline or continuity straight. Very annoying and won't hold my attention for long.

Any fic where Sam and Dean hate each other/don't get along/fuck the other one over.

First person PoV usually, I've seen it done well once or twice I think but most of the time it's a straight 'nope'.

Really badly done porn dialogue, I find a lot of porn dialogue to be iffy anyway but if it makes me cringe I back-click.

The same can be said for OOC fic too, I can handle it to a certain extent but if a character is acting in a way that they really never would in a million years I'm done.

Surprise kinks can do it, and infidelity.

Explaining canon to the audience/giving detailed descriptions of canon characters. I know who these people are; that's why I clicked a description about them. Outsider POV is the exception, but I'm not really drawn to those so it rarely comes up.

A/N's in the middle of a paragraph. "Harry was delighted to realize that his second present was a pack of Fig Newtons (A/N: lol idk if Harry likes Fig Newtons but they're my favourite so w/e!)"

Egregious vocabulary. I like big words as much as the next one, but the point of big words is that often they can communicate something better or more precisely than the roughly equivalent small words. If you're just throwing around 10$ words when simple ones would do, it just makes me think you're a 10-year-old Anne Shirley.

I have only three ironclad ones:

1) fics where the character's dialogue sounds absolutely nothing like it does in canon (my sensitivity to this varies a lot depending on the source canon, and it applies to live action far more than books, but still)

2) fics where character A having the ~courage~ to cheat on their canon significant other with character B is treated as a romantic happy ending where true love conquers all. I'm not totally averse to infidelity, but um, no.

3) fics where the author feels the need to explain that all character A's previous romantic encounters (especially the canonical ones that were meant to be genuine) were worthless and character A never really loved them, and character B is actually the only person character A has ever loved. Unless "has never loved/been loved" is an actual part of their canonical characterization, this is dumb and immature on so many levels.

Depends on the fandom and fic/pairings.

Like...I have a thing for Kakashi/Sakura, k? What I absolutely HATE is the trope that Sakura is a virgin. Though it REALLY depends on how it's done. I prefer Sakura who's had some experience, but ultimately doesn't let sex be THE thing in her life. She's a medic nin!! She's in demand at the hospital and such.

Also, ENDLESS AMOUNTS OF ANGST. I know the age gap can be a thing and I know Kakashi has some hang ups due to losing his loved ones, but I prefer a Kakashi that has acknowledged them and moved on. He still holds them dear, but doesn't let the past hold him back.

You'll be surprised how many fic there AREN'T with just two simple things. :/

But it really depends on the fandom tbh. In some fandoms, I ENJOY lots of PWP fic (SWTOR, I'm lookin' at you~), but in others, like Sleepy Hollow, I'm more into the fluff and will backspace the hell out of a fic that goes smutty. And that's just due to the fact that we ONLY have 6 episodes so far I need more development between Ichabod and Abbie first before I start heading into the smutty stuff.
