Re: Things in fic that make you want to hit the back button
One of these fics included an cruel god (canon character) that turned all of the good characters evil and vice versa. The fic was very well written; it lovingly described how the former heroes started killing their loved ones, and how awful the former evil characters felt about what they had done. The plot may have turned around later to where the characters ended up killing the god and regaining their free will; but the way the story was going it looked like the characters never had free will in the first place. Plus, a lot of characters would still be dead, and the good guys would have to live with what they did. The fic had a huge sense of hopelessness and made me feel miserable reading it. Everyone being IC before the god's interference made it even worse.
The other fic involved Character A lying to Character B. It wasn't just any lie, the plot of their movie hinged on a certain event being true, and having it be a lie in the fic pretty much destroyed everything I liked about A. It was like the author asked "How can I best emotionally destroy B?" before starting the fic. This one was pretty well written, too, but the lie made A very OOC, which made this fic less credible and therefore less painful to read than the one above.
So yeah, poor plots, OOCness, bad formatting, and Mary Sue OCs make me glaze over a fic to see if anything of note can be gleaned out of it before I hit the back button, but needless cruelty to my favorite characters is a definite no.
Also, copy-pasting quotes directly from the canon is very annoying. I want to learn more about the characters, dammit, not turn every little thing they said in the movie into their catch-phrase!
