Word pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2013-11-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have a word that annoys them when people use it because tehy've seen it used obnoxiously SO MANY TIMES.

For me it's "sad/ pathetic" , not only do I see dumbass trolls / people who can't debate but think they can, use it but I knew someone once who was always throwing the word around. If someone said something they didn't like ? "Pathetic" If someone disagreed "you're pathetic" . It made me so mad I wanted to shake her and go "DISAGREEING WITH YOU IS NOT PATHETIC!!"

So now I hate the word. Also it's a stupid ugly word anyway, used to demean people. I mean I know there probably is people who fit the description out there but just I'm sick of the word. It's the favored word of assholes who like to find stupid reasons to look down on people.

Urgh.

I feel that way about anything "-tard". Partly because I have an actual mental disability and the word "retard" was a berserk button for me.

But it is an ugly sounding word.

Exactly.

Plus - sorry, being called a liberal, even with that ugly addendum, is *not* an insult.

I hate it too because I have an uncle who is mentally disabled and he's the sweetest guy. I fucking hate the word retarded so fucking much. So much that using mental retardation to explain my uncle is something I try not to do. It's got such a negative connation that I can't. I don't want yhst connected to my uncle. I guess I'm a bit ridiculous about it. So I'm kinda at loss how to phrase it these days.

Not because they've been used obnoxiously, more because they've been used wrong.

It's "wary", not "weary". If you're weary of something, you're tired of it. If you're wary of it, you're cautious. I mostly see people using weary when they mean wary. And now neither of them look like words to me gdi.

Self-depreciation is not a thing (at least, not unless you're literally talking about your monetary value going down). You are being self-deprecating.

Just because people keep getting it wrong, the whole ancestors/descendants thing. Is it really so hard?

I shall allow Professor Snape to illustrate:

Harry recoils from Snape's touch. "You make me nauseous," he shrieks.

"Well," Snape purrs, "you've made me want to throw up for years, Potter. It only makes sense you'd begin disgusting yourself before long."

LOL

And I know that every time we have one of these threads we have to do the whole descriptive vs prescriptive language battl, and I get it. I get that language changes. We don't say thee or thou or forsooth anymore in common parlance. The meanings of words change over time or fall out of favor, and I'm totally cool with that. But at the same time, I can't just say, "Bee boop ba bee bop," and expect y'all to understand that I mean, "Dinner is served." I do believe that most of language has to retain meaning, and for whatever reason, nauseous is one of the words I've glommed on to. If you are nauseous, you make other people throw up. If you are nauseated, you feel like throwing up yourself.

Ha, I thought this was going in a different direction. XD Oh well--sharing anyway.

The word Corps annoys me because it's not pronounced like "corpse," I always forget that, so it takes me like ten seconds of pause before I say it and then I look like an idiot.
