Re: To Non-Americans who have visited America

Well, you accused me of trying to "argue" some point by simply describing my experience in the US. It is what it is. No, it isn't like that in Canada. Sneering at Canadians/Europeans (as in upthread) as if we were acting like only your shit stinks (when, hell, I even went out of my way to point out that we have our own, different race issues) by describing our experiences, contrasting them with our experiences back home, and talking about how that made us feel is just plain pointless. And over-the-top defensive.

Yes, not all place in the US are the same. I said "Chicago". And "SEATAC". For what it's worth, yes, I've been to New York and Boston and all around New England and there was far less creep-tacular segregation of employment and living space than I've experienced elsewhere in the country. That said, that "elsewhere" where it's prominent and awful still exists, and (aside from the reserves) to an extent it simply doesn't in my home country and the countries of others. And it's disturbing. Maybe you'd find our reserves disturbing (I hope you would - they're awful).

Get your hackles down. OP asked a question, and good an answer. They didn't ask for it to be all rainbows and sunshine. Post your own Canada/Europe-related thread if you want.

For the record, New York City is racist as fuck. They just like to pretend they aren't--see the Stop and Frisk fiasco and arresting that one black actor at Barney's. A lot of people there only like people of color when they're affluent or somehow trendy. When I mentioned New York I meant upstate.

I guess what I'm trying to argue is that when I was overseas (explicitly not Canada, though I've only been to Montreal and Toronto) I saw some equally creepy shit. We have more creepy shit because we have more people of color to be creepy toward.

Well post a thread about overseas then. I'll gladly add my 2 cents about the shitty things I've seen in the other continents/countries I've been to. Where I currently live? Also racist as fuck, but in a different way. And oh that Asian-on-Asian racism that manages to be the most subtle but the most virulent of all o_O
