What canons do you think you could give a reasonably accurate and detailed description of based entirely on fannish osmosis, either through Tumblr or F!S or elsewhere?

Alternately, let's give each other canons and see how close or off-base our secondhand knowledge is.

Probably nothing.

But, based on the gifs I've seen, Merlin and Arthur are legit in love with each other. Like, their love is canon. Yes or no?

Also, the Bee Movie is actually about a woman falling in love with and wanting to fuck a bee. Yes or no?

No, no canon love for Merlin/Arthur, despite what the fangirls want to believe.

Also, have not seen Bee Movie either, but I think yes?

Downton Abbey. Well there's too many characters to give a complete breakdown of everything, but I can totally come up with like a dozen or more major plot points just off the top of my head and I've seen maybe 15 minutes of it ever.

What plot points could you come up with?

Supernatural started out being a show about two unhealthily codependent monster-hunting brothers driving around the country killing monsters and having female secondary characters drop like flies all around them. Then, a few seasons in, Some Shit went down and the younger brother went evil/mind-whammied/something; around this time Castiel joined the show and began developing a Very Strong Connection with the elder brother. Since then, heaven and hell have pretty much barfed all over everything and the plot has run away from the writers. Also, car.

y/n?

Eh, I know they're Sam and Dean, but it was only a few months ago that I figured out for certain which is which (Dean is the short one, Sam is the one with the hair). It was actually a fandomsecret that helped me remember the difference -- anyone remember the one with Dean's face pasted onto Cinderella?

The Very Strong Connection is largely exaggerated. And the younger brother is mind-whammied every season.

Hmm, I could take a stab at Doctor Who. The general concept and some of the major characters, items and creatures at least, and maybe a handful of important canon events.

Doctor Who was one of my fandoms up until quite recently, so go for it and I can tell you how well you're doing.

Re: Inspired by #4: Everything I know about (Fandom) I Learned from Tumblr

Okay, here goes...

There's this race of advanced time-traveling aliens called Time Lords with two hearts, who live for centuries because they can regenerate into new bodies when they die (possibly a limited number of times, but that may be up for debate.) The Doctor is currently on his twelfth(?) regeneration.

Time Lords write in complex combinations of circles and pick the names they'll be known by according to their temperaments or ambitions, hence why the protagonist of the show is The Doctor and his arch-frenemy is/was The Master (who hears drums in his head and has tried to take over the world or the Universe more times than Pinky and the Brain.) There is/was also a female Time Lord called The Rani. The Time Lords' planet, Gallifrey, blew up, and The Doctor may or may not be the last of his species.

Time Lords travel in (sentient? AI?) vehicles called TARDIS, which can take the form of different objects. The Doctor's got stuck as a London phone box at some point, and he either can't, won't, or hasn't fixed it. I gather the TARDIS can be rather opinionated at times and may not go where she's steered?

The Doctor likes humans, and often travels with them. The humans who hang around with him are called Companions. Some of them are named Sarah Jane, Rory, and the very horny Jack Harkness (who was also in Torchwood, and became some kind of fixed space-time nexus or something.)

Some of the monsters the Doctor fights include the Weeping Angels, who appear to be statues but are actually time-manipulating aliens who do bad things to you if you look at them but then look away or blink or something? And can turn you into one of them? And the Daleks, who look like giant self-propelled salt and pepper shakers or R2D2 with a terrible skin condition, and want to exterminate everyone. And also a lady who's nothing but a face stretched on a frame, ew. (According to someone on my dash, there's also some really horrible species whose symbol matches one on Supernatural which suggests they may be demons, but that's all I know about it.)

Randomly: apart from the aforementioned attempted taking over of stuff, the Master once died and refused to regenerate, and the Doctor was terribly broken up about it. Several of his Companions have also died, and he married one of them at some point (presumably she was alive at the time.) The 2012 Olympics are one of those fixed points like Jack for some reason. The Doctor can also communicate with infants, and he keeps hoping he'll regenerate some time as a ginger.

Teen Wolf. The vanilla dude is the hero and the titular wolf, and the scowly guy turned him I think?? And scowly wolf has a tragic past, and the kid with the nose is like the plucky wingman, and there's some girls and some of them kick ass, and Martouf is a hot dad.

Exo. I'm not into them, but they have so many crazy stalker fans that there's fanvids of them EVERYWHERE, and they float all over my dash. Also they're an SM group so they have strong 'personalities' assigned by the company, so they're designed to be appealing. Also I've gotten the impression that while Luhan looks like an adorable doll-like girl-child he's actually a giant dork?? idk man, and opinion keeps vacillating on Kai between the role the company assigned him and his 'real' personality.

While I have played several other Tales games, I have not played Symphonia. I am pretty sure it's about a boy named Lloyd Irving whose biological dad dropped him off a cliff with a dog-like alien as a protector because for whatever reason he couldn't take care of him. Later on he meets his biological dad without knowing it when he's trying to help his friend Colette become an angel?? Then his biological dad ends up being with the villains and eventually banishes himself to space for the good of the world. Also there's some boy who seems good but then it turns out he's evil and trying to do something along the lines of reviving his sister. Also there are crystals that make you immortal but they're horrible? I think I might know all of the plot twists and absolutely nothing else.

Oh yeah and there's this dude named Zelos. He's also secretly with the villains and is overly protective his sister. And this ninja chick named Sheena who has a fake summon spirit and is the party's summoner. There's also a pair of siblings but I can't really say anything too interesting about them other than the fact that they're both know-it-alls.

Game of Thrones is about a crazy royal family who's competing over a chair (literal or figurative I'm not sure). There's a brother and sister who are sleeping together, a middle aged dude who wants to have sex with a young teenage girl who may or may not be related to him, a young boy who's a prince and a total brat whose parents are related (but I don't think they're the same characters as the previous brother and sister who are fucking). There are a lot of sex scenes, there are some sort of magical wolves and possibly dragons. A dude gets decapitated at some point and something incredibly shocking happened at a wedding. Oh, and winter is coming.

Thor: The Dark World is about how Loki, after many shenanigans in previous movies, finds himself stuck in a box wearing silly slippers, occasionally visited by adopted Mum (who seems to basically be the only one who actually genuinely likes him and who taught him all he knows), occasionally throwing magical temper tantrums. Thor shows up and hauls him off for Magical Pseudo-Incestuous Road Trips, Jane comes along too, wears snazzy clothes, slaps Loki (who, uh, seems to enjoys it far too much), and goes from her normal mode of SCIENCE! <3 to 24/7 THOR! <3. There are creepy-looking... elves? and Spoilery Sad Shit happens that tend to massive assaults to the feels. There are also characters named Darcy and Sif who basically everyone loves.

Downton Abbey

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
The events take place over about a decade somewhere around World War I (not quite sure how long before or after the timeline extends so far) in three seasons even though the characters don't seem to age any more than their actors. Everyone has really great eloquent one-liners and the costumes and hairstyles are pure porn. Seriously, they look so damn fine.

The main family is called the Crawleys and they're super-rich with an epic castle house and have loads of servants. Some fucking gorgeous lady with the awesomest eyebrows I've ever seen is called Lady Mary and she's either the main character or a fan favorite, not sure which. She's in love with this blond dude called Matthew who apparently has the same last name as her (...do I even want to know?) who punched some smarmy asshole in the face, but a bunch of stuff happens that stops them from getting together. Part of it is that he was fighting in the war, and part of it was that he got a fiancee called Lavinia for some reason. Mary did something bad that she gets blackmailed for, I think. She and her sister Ethel are dicks to each other. Matthew and Mary got married and spent a lot of time talking in bed, and then he died in a car crash, which sucks. Everybody went batshit fucking insane when this happened.

Sybil is the youngest daughter I think? Not quite sure. She's rebellious and was a nurse and eloped with one of the servants. I think she really likes this old doctor who she did nursing stuff with. I'm not sure exactly why, but it seems like a lot of the characters spend a lot of time away from home in a hospital full of wounded soldiers? Or am I missing something about the hospital's location? Sybil died of something because of some incompetent doctor who -- replaced? Undermined? I don't quite get it -- the old doctor who Sybil liked.

Maggie Smith plays someone called the Dowager Countess Violet. She has better lines and more opinions than Lord Henry Wotton from The Picture of Dorian Gray and her comments can be reaction-gif'd to anything. I'm seriously thinking of watching the show just for her. I'm not sure who she is or why she's always hanging around but her last name is Crawley so maybe she's like an aunt or in-law or something?

Thomas is gay, which is bad in this time period, and he is either kind of a douchebag or just has a beef with a popular character -- hard to tell with fandom. He tried to kiss some pretty guy-servant and got in trouble for it, but fans thought that the fact that the guy-servant didn't return his feelings was sadder than him going to jail or something. I don't know how this storyline ended or if it's on a cliffhanger or what.

Mrs. Patmore is the cook and she yells at people all the time and says "the trouble with you all is that you're all in love with the wrong people" which fans say totally sums up the show, so I'm gonna assume the show has a lot more romantic subplots than I've been able to pick out.

Everyone wants Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson to get together. Mrs. Hughes is super sweet and unrealistically progressive and...had cancer? A friend had cancer? Was it Mrs. Patmore who had cancer? I'm unclear. I think they're like, head servants or something? Is he the butler? Everyone thinks he's adorable because he's really melodramatic about his ~duty~ and obsessed with things being ~proper~ and is super-devoted to the father of Lady Mary who I assume is the head of the family, who is played by that guy who played the pirate captain in Doctor Who. I assume they're not together seeing as how the main gifset that gets posted in support of this is not them kissing or confessing love or anything, but is this thing where he's singing some cute romantic song to himself while she secretly listens and smiles.

Some old maidservant called O'Brien is totally madly jealously in love with the mother (I think, unless she's their stepmother?) of Mary and Ethel and Sybil. I am not sure if this is canon or just shipping.

Everything bad happens to Bates, who...I'm not sure if he's a servant, but he's not a rich aristocrat guy. The universe hates his guts and he has a terrible, no-good, very bad life, which he never gets angry about. If anything bad can possibly happen to him, it happens, and they all happen one after another -- I don't know how much of an exaggeration this is, but apparently he went to jail for a while as a result of some elaborate scheme by someone who hated him. If anything good happens to him, about five bad things will happen to both counteract the good thing and make him feel guilty for it, I think. He's in love with Kate from Robin Hood, who is a maid and too young for him, but I listened to their theme from the soundtrack and it is the most heartbreakingly gorgeous thing EVER, so I believe there's more stuff under the surface there. I assume this is why he hasn't offed himself or gone on a killing spree.

This is really funny because it's almost right in some places, but also mostly wildly inaccurate and obviously tainted by fandom interpretations and shipping.

Teen Wolf

A fairly chill dude named Scott with a face shaped like Nevada becomes a werewolf. His adventures are mixed with high school life to form a furry metaphor for puberty. He likes this girl named Allison(?) who's fairly inoffensive and is best friends with a nerd name Stiles who I think was not his friend before the series started? Or if they were friends, they recently became them.

Also there is a threatening wolfpack lead by alpha wolf Derek. Fans ignore Scott and focused on shipping Stiles/Derek even though they don't really share that much screen time because uke/seme stereotypes or something.

There have been two seasons of this and in the third there's a bath tub with ice cubes that was in ALL THE TRAILERS which is either important or just looks cool.

Until pretty recently what I knew about Welcome To Nightvale was apparently that it has exactly two characters in it, Cecil and Carlos, a canon gay couple who are a radio host and a scientist, and if you think either of them is white you're a nasty racist, and one of them may apparently literally turn into a teenage girl?

Actually that's still pretty much what I know about it, except I think I heard someone mention a character that is not Cecil or Carlos the other day, so I may be wrong on that first point.
