It was pretty damn soul crushing for myself and everyone who heard it at the time. I still remember the incredible silence after she (the principal) said that. Thank goodness I flunked and dropped out of that particular college ugh.

I know the US has counseling at school, if I'm correct?

Most US colleges do, yes, but it's incredibly hard to get into. You'll wait weeks, sometimes months, to get into see a therapist who has no idea who you are even if you've been there before because they are incredibly overworked. If your problems are more than a little anxiety/stress management, they try to foist you off on someone else, and if it's "only" stress, they tell you to manage your time better and take time to relax (but not how to do that).

I joined the military instead of college, and that was the point. You're a number. It's up to you to distinguish yourself by your actions; you don't count just because you're there and breathing air.

I thought that was valuable.

In corporate life, yes, we are numbers.

Really late reply but...

Thing is, I was scared shitless of college and hearing those words just made me feel worse about the whole thing. Not to mention there was a lot of background pressuring me to do my best.

I do understand now that my actions are what sets me apart, but back in the day all I kept thinking was "They just want my money (which I don't have)! Those bastards!"
