I joined the military instead of college, and that was the point. You're a number. It's up to you to distinguish yourself by your actions; you don't count just because you're there and breathing air.

I thought that was valuable.

In corporate life, yes, we are numbers.

Really late reply but...

Thing is, I was scared shitless of college and hearing those words just made me feel worse about the whole thing. Not to mention there was a lot of background pressuring me to do my best.

I do understand now that my actions are what sets me apart, but back in the day all I kept thinking was "They just want my money (which I don't have)! Those bastards!"
