I think it's a terrible idea and my reasoning is that it would be offensive to someone either way.

The Dr goes on with his life (her?) as if nothing happened? So gender doesn't matter at all?
Or the Dr acknowledges gender issues and it's done in a rush because it's not the focus of the show?

I dislike both options :/

It could just mean gender doesn't matter at all to some people. Which it doesn't. You can perfectly happy being a man and also not really have much of a problem with being a woman.

That's not it, though. While a person may be totally fine with being either a man or a woman, it does not mean that they would still be the same person and nothing about their character would change.

(In my opinion, that's more about biological sex, though. I really don't get the concept of "gender", unless we are talking GDD).

But his character changes with every regeneration anyway. I hardly think biological sex would make a bigger change.

True enough. I was speaking generally rather than specifically about the Doctor. As it is, I see no reason why he can't be female. [but then I'm only casually familiar with the franchise]

If I was the Doctor and one day had a "female" body, I'd just go on as normal, I suspect, because I don't feel very strongly gendered inside (I get surprised by my own genitalia sometimes, like I could have those other genitalia other people have just as well). What might change is how people treated me, and I might have to change accordingly to adapt to that.
