I think it's a terrible idea and my reasoning is that it would be offensive to someone either way.

The Dr goes on with his life (her?) as if nothing happened? So gender doesn't matter at all?
Or the Dr acknowledges gender issues and it's done in a rush because it's not the focus of the show?

I dislike both options :/

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It could just mean gender doesn't matter at all to some people. Which it doesn't. You can perfectly happy being a man and also not really have much of a problem with being a woman.

If I was the Doctor and one day had a "female" body, I'd just go on as normal, I suspect, because I don't feel very strongly gendered inside (I get surprised by my own genitalia sometimes, like I could have those other genitalia other people have just as well). What might change is how people treated me, and I might have to change accordingly to adapt to that.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it would need to be a big deal either -- but I don't have a very strong gender identity. Many people feel differently.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes the Doctor is of an alien species. It's an alien species that has two genders: male and female.

I don't care about the rest of your secret because it's a non-issue, but it annoys me to no end when this argument is brought up and people like you respond with "But he's an alien!"

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP is referring to the fact that the terms "male" and "female" refer to constructs made by humans. So it's really not much of a stretch to say that these constructs wouldn't apply to an alien.

I give zero shits about this show and the character, but I have a lot of rl friends who fucking love it and have strong opinions and I'm done hearing about it for one reason: the fact that it's still somehow a novelty for a character to have female genitalia. Even if it were treated as a non-issue and the Doctor would go on being the Doctor, there's still the air of "look look it's a girl now! Isn't that interesting?! Wink wink, nudge nudge!" that kind of grosses me out.

You know what, I hate the argument that cause the Doctor is some advanced space alien species he is clearly ~*~so above~*~ gender and sex. Not only does it end up being kind of offensive with how it seems to imply that if we were just advanced enough we wouldn't care about sex and gender but... there is nothing in doctor who verse, and correct me if i am wrong, that implies time lords are genderless. Nothing. Not even a throw away line of 'oh, you humans and your quaint notions of gender'.

Meh, I'm not invested in this show, but the reasons against the Doctor being a woman that I see here aren't convincing. Arguing that the Doctor be kept cis male for the sake of these issues kind of defeats the purpose. The same for any sci-fi show that explores possibilities, really.

There's always going to be a thousand and one reasons brought up against such a "radical" change and maybe the show should do that because it is viewed as a radical change. Doing it well should be the issue, not the fact they are doing it.

It's never going to happen, this makes me both angry and sad.

So I don't watch it. I don't buy it's things. I change the channel if it comes on. (The switching point being the second or so espisode I saw out of context where he had gained a new body and frantically checked over himself to make sure he was a female, acting as if being in a female body is somehow a horrible thing)

I'm just so sick of cool scifi shows where the main character is male.

:/

Didn't we do this a couple of days ago? I really cannot be fucking arsed to go over the same wank again so soon.

Can we not do "Why 'Genesis of the Daleks' is actually quite a shit story" instead?

It's too long, the clams are pointless, the weapons and uniforms were just borrowed from the BBC War Props Dept. and Sarah does nothing but be a distressed damsel...and that is still more than Harry.

It is a shit Dr Who adventure, and it doesn't deserve the hype.

But at least it doesn't have a Girl!Doctor though, that would be horrible.

I just really want to see this, okay?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2013-11-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember a scene where the Doctor said the Corsair (spelling?) was sometimes a he and sometimes a she and it was literally a throwaway line. It was never mentioned again in the show. And I think that an alien society (where children may or may not be formed by looms) would see sex and gender very differently than humans do.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember any of the Doctors ever identifying themselves as male in the traditional sense (like having outward genitalia). We don't know a whole lot about Gallifreyan biology except that they resemble humans and have two hearts and the ability to reform themselves (maybe they have a whole other organ for that which is kind of like our appendix, so the reason the appendix is useless is because we can't regenerate?) The thing is, most people think of gender in terms of males with testes and sperm and females with ovaries and eggs, and they make babies, but what if that wasn't the case? I just kind of really want to see that played out.

Meh, the kind of people who get upset about the Doctor becoming a woman are the kind of people who think it's a great show.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
My problem with a female Doctor is that it'd stop being a show about somebody wandering the universe and having adventures, and become a show about gender politics. And sorry, but that's not what I want from a Saturday evening's entertainment.

I hate the idea for the same reason I hate genderswaps in general: the way to write a good female character is not to take a male character and turn them into a female character, it's to write a good female character from the ground up. Otherwise you're basically saying that the way to write a good female character is to write a male character and swap the genitalia, and that's kind of offensive.

If racism and sexism were less prevalent, the Doctor probably would have run the gamut of different sex and race combinations! It would have been very interesting to see how a character can still stay the same character when these characteristics of their bodies have changed.

asdfghjkl; not a river song puh-lease!!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would be awesome if the doctor was a black dude. :D

I don't want a female doctor. I like the doctor as a male and it would be a big adjustment for me especially if they went teh sexeh route instead of just wacky and weird like they usually do.

Seriously when is a female character not "teh sexeh" on TV? Hello Sweetie my arse. I hate River Song because she's ALWAYS doing the sexy route. Don't you think you'd get really fed up with the Doctor swishing hips and posing and acting like a freaking River Song??

Ugh. Yeah. So not ready for a female doctor. Would love other cool female characters on this show or off, however. :) But not a sexy female!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's so overdone and I want some girl characters to identify with who aren't shown as being mainly/mostly/largely about the sexy. (I'm sure as hell not. I'm just a person who happens to be female.)

My dad actually said, "Yes, I guess it's about time for a female doctor." And I was like, "I guess. But I don't want one."

Helen Mirren or Judi Dench or Emma Thompson

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe Cate Blanchett. I could see any of them as The Doctor. Of course, they are all really good actresses. I guess my point is that, yeah, it should be about how the role is done and not any gender essentialism.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
It would probably involve terrible writing anyway if it did happen. I mean, why would the Doctor, who's been male 12+ times, suddenly regenerate into a female body? We know from his regeneration into Eleven that he wouldn't do it on purpose (when he thought he might have done it at first he was clearly horrified) and if some technobabble bollocks were to turn him female during a regeneration and he couldn't find a way to turn back...

What exactly would have been achieved? A female Doctor for the sake of a female Doctor that woud probably only last one regeneration and then never be spoken of again. Completely pointless.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
I would love there to be a female Doctor only because the wank would be epic and glorious.

That is all.
