I never get it when people say "ugly" about someone who is not morbidly obese, does not have pimples all over their face (...and even then?? I know people with horrible acne who still do not qualify as "ugly"), has a normal skin colour, no skin diseases, and no deformities. Ugly is a very strong word, just as "beautiful" is. It means, yanno, ugly. Real repulsive. Hard to look at.

what, are you a jabba-hutt-sized leper with horrible acne ?

Thanks for reminding me why I rarely comment on FS these days.

Yeah, people are being pretty shitty and judgmental about looks. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean even skin tone? "Normal skin colour" comes off as highly offensive.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed they meant some gangrene shit or something

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
psa: don't google "gangrene"

I think they mean a skin color that isn't green or blue. At least that's how I read it.

Though I work with someone with vitiligo and while it's distracting (but then I tend to have a phobia of difformities, and while it's not, I do tend to find it difficult to ignore completely. And at least I knew what it was before I met the guy, so I didn't have to ask, or wonder if it was contagious...), it doesn't make someone "ugly".

And my definition of the word is pretty much the same as dreemyweird's.

^Yes, I meant even skin tone, but also the fact that the colour is natural and not produced by some kind of ailment. Deep purple/blue/inflammation red/jaundice yellow can all be quite disturbing at first, when one is yet unaccustomed to looking at them.

Sorry if this came off as offensive; be assured that I did not intend for it to be this way.

You ever see the skin of somebody who's kidneys have failed?

I have.

Normal Skin Color is perhaps not the best way to say it, but this person is talking about a legit, valid thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
You should be able to infer that it means "normal for your skin type", whatever that maybe. You could be any race and not look so hot all jaundiced and dying.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-09 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair... kinda this. I mean, I don't want to get into weight wank because I don't think it correlates absolutely with being attractive or unattractive, I think it's more about how you put yourself together and present yourself. But someone who is...

-Physically fit
-Even skin tone
-Well-dressed, keeps a good appearance
-has a face with no unusually distracting characteristics (idk, like, an enormous nose, very asymmetrical, lots of acne/warts/etc)

...calling them "ugly" just seems a bit like a lie. They might not be what you consider attractive, but ugly? I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but c'mon.

Exactly.

I agree with you there.

I see some celebs people have a thing about and think "Ehhh...? What? What's so great about them?". I don't think the celeb is ugly though, because "ugly" makes me think of a visceral reaction of revulsion, not my usual attitude of apathy that people who are not my type elicit.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[personal profile] essexite 2013-11-10 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I feel that way when people claim that Sarah Jessica Parker is 'ugly'. No, she's a perfectly normal looking woman who doesn't happen to be drop dead gorgeous.
