I haven't watched Daria in years and I never watched it THAT much, but I think a lot of it stems from the fact that it's a relationship between two female characters that isn't just "let's talk about the male characters." Not that there's anything wrong with that, but female friendship can be kind of rare to see in media.

This was my thinking, too. It wasn't that it was an omg great friendship, just that the friendship existed and got a lot of focus independent of other things. Same with Daria's relationships with her sister and mother, which lord knows weren't positive.
