Part of the tragedy is that Jr. would have said the same roughly a year before. And one could argue that at that point it's not primarily Walt's love or desire to provide that causes him to make that phone call, but his pride; to put his name to the money he wants to send and to hear his son champion his efforts without even considering how Jr. feels.
