Instant drama, just add abusive childhood

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I see this ALL THE TIME, in many fandoms, when someone wants to have a h/c fic, they go straight for the 'childhood abuse' cliche. There are some characters who have canon or implied histories of abuse, but for so many it just comes out of nowhere, and it isn't well or sensitively portrayed.

Especially when the authors obviously have no idea what childhood abuse is like emotionally and copypaste everything from Wikipedia.
[not advocating the first-hand experience argument here, just... maybe some personal investment and interpretation would be nice?]

Don't you just love it when the characters get a love interest, and then all the trauma of their childhood is completely forgotten, with no lasting effects?

Oh, fandom.
