Pretty self-explanatory. What is some fanon that you just can't stand either because it's wildly OOC/inaccurate/nonsensical, or because the implications of or attitudes behind the fanon piss you off? Any type of fanon, from made-up plot points to assumptions about characters' backstory to common interpretations of canon, is fair game!

What's this shit about Princess Leia always being a virgin in every single fanfic ever? I'm not saying it's OOC for her to be a virgin, but WHY IS IT ALWAYS ASSUMED ARGH.

Mostly from the A-Team because it's the fandom I'm most familiar with, but chances are if these tropes pop up in my other fandoms I'll hate them too.
Face was a child prostitute.
Face was in the foster system and he was emotionally/physically/sexually abused.
Face was sexually abused by a priest when he lived in the Catholic orphanage.
Face sleeps with people to get what he needs 99,9% of the time.
Murdock is clinically insane.

Castiel has black wings fanon. I don't hate it, but it annoys me. Obviously fandom does not know shadows =/= wing color.

The fact that many MCU only fans don't know that Lady Loki is actually Loki horribly taking over and violating Sif's body.

And I know that, while being pretty much incompatible with the Canon, it is one of the more plausible interpretations (what with ACD being all progressive about drugs), but I cannot with the attitude behind it.

Which is a bit ridiculous, seeing as I just started to read The Seven-Per-Cent Solution and am liking it so far. My problems are really not with the idea itself, they're with how people treat it as TEH canon and use it to reimagine the relationship between Watson and Holmes in the dullest way possible.

(and I do not mean to say, of course, that Holmes doesn't have a problem with cocaine - he obviously does - but it is not the kind of problem a real drug addict character would be facing; and, as the whole thing is still Victorian, it does not translate into the modern context, not like that).

Why is Kathy Stabler evil and/or crazy in so many E/O fics? In canon she was a perfectly nice wife and mother who put up with a ton of shit from Elliot and never, that I recall, displayed any animosity toward Olivia. Did these people even watch the show?

I hate in Teen Wolf fandom how Derek is portrayed as monosyllabic or worse, stupid. I could live the rest of my days happy if I never see him called Sourwolf again. And it pisses me off no end to see abusive behavior portrayed as sexy. Derek constantly assaulting Stiles is in no way cute or funny and it wouldn't have Stiles coming in his pants.

Mostly from Teen Wolf since that's what I'm about these days:

-Derek is monosyllabic, doesn't have emotions except for anger and is socially awkward
-Stiles as pack mom
-Stiles getting turned on by Derek slamming him into things
-Scott being dumb
-Sourwolf. Stiles called Derek that one time and it's way overused
-Peter having a wife and kids who died in the fire. I guess this was assumed before we knew more of his backstory, but after we got the flashback episode, I doubt he was married let alone had kids. He was manipulative and conniving even before the fire.
-Isaac being like a puppy that everyone wants to take care of

I have soooooooo many of these it'd take an entire essay to talk about all of them, so I'll just list my top three.

#3: Captain Kirk is a idiot. IDK where people are getting this idea from, but it's not true at all. In fact, I think in one episode it was mentioned that he was at the top of his class at Starfleet Academy (although I can't remember which episode, so don't quote me on that). Even if he wasn't, he's still not stupid.

#2: Soundwave's cassettes are actually his children. Mostly because every fic I've read that had this premise was either terribly written, creepy, or both.

Sherlock Holmes's parents being abusive. It's not OOC or unrealistic at all, but I'm sick of it being taken as canon in every fic. It's also kind of offensive to me, like the only reason a person would be non-neurotypical is CHILDHOOD TRAUMA OMG.

Same with him having a disastrous love affair early in life that soured him on romance until Irene/Watson "cured" him with her/his magical brain/penis.

–Phoenix and Edgeworth being completely out of contact between State vs. Gramarye and the events of Apollo Justice. (So glad that Dual Destinies jossed this.) Relatedly, Edgeworth flipping out about Phoenix having a daughter without even bother to find out that she's adopted. I think I actually read a fic where he did this after meeting her. Because clearly Phoenix was cheatin on him before they even got together or something.

–Apollo's characterization; namely, fics that make him either a blushy/weepy uke (Herr Blushy-blushy, anyone? I swear there was a fic where Klavier called him that) or that make into a nearly-amoral badass who beats the shit out of/tortures criminals.

I see this ALL THE TIME, in many fandoms, when someone wants to have a h/c fic, they go straight for the 'childhood abuse' cliche. There are some characters who have canon or implied histories of abuse, but for so many it just comes out of nowhere, and it isn't well or sensitively portrayed.

Pacific Rim fics where Newt is trans* for no apparent reason. IDK I just don't really get it - there's some canons where I can see a trans* AU fitting with the character, but for this one, I just don't get it.

Also, Pacific Rim fics where Vanessa Gottlieb pops up, because until fandom, I had never even heard of this character. She doesn't appear in the movie, she isn't even mentioned. What the hell.


WNTV: ALL the Cecil headcanons. At first I was like: "Oh, tattoos, third eye, tentacles, wings. Whatever, I guess." But now that everyone seems to be following the same headcanon, it irritates me.
Why can't Cecil just be a normal guy?

Manic pixie dream girl Parker. She is socially undeveloped, and she looks at the world differently, but she's a grown-ass woman and a complete professional.

Woobie Eliot. Just...no. The man is a professional fucking hitman and has been for years. He internalizes that shit or he deals with it efficiently.

Asshole Nate. Well, okay, the man is an asshole, but he's also a good man who LOVES, to the point of madness. I've had people review my stories with "But Nate would never say a kind word to his team," omg shut uuuupppp, he's not gonna gush like a teenager but he knows how to be kind and supportive.

Rapist Elves in LotR fics.

ARGH! NO! JUST NO!

Tolkien himself said that if an elf got raped, their soul flees their body and goes to Mandos - i.e. They die.
An Elf who commits rape? Might as well be an orc, that's how bad it is.

I just wish more people writing elf-rape prompts on the Kink Meme would remember this, especially if the rapist elf is one of the big name characters, like Thranduil, or if it's a random no-name OC, if and when it's found out, they get punished, and severely. Like death penalty.

Not fanon but it's amplified by fans in fanfic: Dean's freckles. The way people talk about it kind of gets gross like they're pawing themselves about their fair haired virgin princess. Yuck.

This is gonna get long...

It's been awhile since I was in Inuyasha fandom but, the fanon I hated the most was Sesshoumaru's shoulder fur thing being his tail. As in attached to his ass. Where the hell did that even come from?

Kaldur never using contractions and tossing in a bunch of fifty-dollar words where five-dollar words will do fine. Oh, and, constantly fucking saying "my friend" instead of using someone's name. He's a little more stiff and formal than your average U.S. American teenager, sure, but he's not actually an import from the sixteenth century.

Eames constantly using "darling", and always as a genuine term of endearment. He was being snide and sarcastic the one time he used it in canon, to put Arthur in his place for chewing his ass out earlier, that's all. Oh, and, Dom being a clueless idiot; he was a self-absorbed, obsessive, and somewhat mad genius in the movie, not a comically absent-minded professor baffled by those young people and their rock music.

In Witch Hunter Robin, Robin being written as a wide-eyed naive ingenue who can't defend herself. She was a girl who unflinchingly injured/killed people by setting them on fire with her mind; "innocent" and "helpless" are not terms I would apply to her. Whether a broody creeper ten years her senior is trying to get into her pants or not.

There's so many for Gundam Wing that I can't even remember most of them in detail; they just kind of blur together in an endless stream of "who the hell came up with this" in my head. There's the pilots all living together in a house having sex and/or shenanigans while going out with their Gundams on missions, really hated that one. Trowa never talking. Wufei being a raving misogynist. Quatre and Duo being gentle sweethearts instead of the former being a mass-murderer and the latter being a cunning rebel. And Relena being insane. She was spoiled and deluded sometimes, not crazy, especially when compared to fucking Heero. But then I was one of approximately five fans who liked her, so.

Good Omens Crowley having black wings. As in, I understand that the book does not imply any color, merely that you could only with difficulty tell demons and angels apart and color is not implied at all (so it could be black). But it irritates me how almost everybody assumes so from the start. Why the stereotyping, when you get explicit freedom to get creative?

So will you goddamn stop woobifying people who have done terrible things and stop demonizing people who have sympathetic motivations. There is a goddamn middle ground between being a good or evil person and there are very few characters, if any, that lay on either side.

I don't mind if you make a highschool AU so you can pretend all of those terrible things never happened - AOT is a series that needs all the fluff it can get - but if you're talking about the canon then you need to accept that people can be complex and that you won't like everything they do.


Also, Corpse Party fandom? If I fucking hear 'friendzone' from you one more goddamn time I will choke you. Stop calling girls ungrateful bitches because they dared to not like a girl/guy back. GAH.
