Holmes is a drug addict

And I know that, while being pretty much incompatible with the Canon, it is one of the more plausible interpretations (what with ACD being all progressive about drugs), but I cannot with the attitude behind it.

Which is a bit ridiculous, seeing as I just started to read The Seven-Per-Cent Solution and am liking it so far. My problems are really not with the idea itself, they're with how people treat it as TEH canon and use it to reimagine the relationship between Watson and Holmes in the dullest way possible.

(and I do not mean to say, of course, that Holmes doesn't have a problem with cocaine - he obviously does - but it is not the kind of problem a real drug addict character would be facing; and, as the whole thing is still Victorian, it does not translate into the modern context, not like that).

THIS. Well....actually, I'd say that Holmes likely became addicted to cocaine at some point in the series after a long period of purely recreational use, since Watson's description of Holmes's sobriety from The Missing Three-Quarter is a pretty bang-on illustration of drug addiction that even holds up today.

However, IA that at no point during any of the actual stories where cocaine is mentioned or alluded to do we see Holmes actually in the throes of physical addiction. Even in The Sign of Four, he's just bored, bored, bored, and acting self-destructive as a result of his inability to deal with his depression. His need for cocaine is normally a psychological "addiction", not a real physical dependency -- he's unable to stand living for extended periods without a case to occupy his mind unless he has cocaine to make it bearable.

Which is, you know, a lot more interesting than a simple physical dependency, which can take hold of anyone, regardless of their personality or changes in their circumstances and surroundings. Whereas for Holmes, his drug use is completely based on his personality and external circumstances.

+1 and enjoy the book! The West End Horror is also quite good.

Someone on here linked to this loooooooooooooooong fic that was based on Granada's version of DEVI, only the reason Holmes was in the country to recover was "Sherlock in rehab" -- yeah, NO. I mean, it was well-written and all, but there were parts of it where I was facepalming, going doesnotknowhowtoVictorianyo. It wasn't so off-putting I back-buttoned out of the story, but it was like every little 90s-drug-rehab-reality-show reference just accumulated into a wealth of "This could have been such a good story, what a disappointment." :-(

I'm fairly certain I know the story you are talking about, and that's my sentiments, as well. The writing style was very decent, and there were moments I liked a lot, but... not in agreement with the way canon works, no. And not my cuppa.

I MAY know what fic you're talking about...could you tell me or give me a hint as to who it is?

Since we are not bashing the author or being aggressive in any other way, I figure it makes no difference if the link is here or not. This author has plenty of fans who are of a different opinion and shall give them praise regardless.

original AYRT

Yeah I didn't want to stir the pot in case I offended the reccer. Granada fans (I count myself in that number) certainly appreciate the pastiche as a good filling-in of DEVI and the touches that were Canon-compliant, were at the very least sourced reasonably. I.e., Holmes and his artwork was solidly referenced, but the direction the author took it in was a little meh. Again, given that in Victorian times, both Holmes and Watson likely would have been able to draw at least passably, given that both are well-accustomed to the use of quill/pen and paper, and Holmes' general character as described in the books, the shyness angle, and the whole interplay that came out of that, was definitely OOC to my thinking. A bit of projecting on the fic author's part? IDK.

I gave the story a lot of leeway though, in that I read the whole way through despite the flaws. I am very highly biased in favour of the Granada version of The Devil's Foot.

other anon

Yup, that's the one I was thinking of. It's good, as far as reading pleasure goes -- hits that id-fic button just right and is well-written, but yeah...not incredibly believable for the characters and time period.
