movie!Odin was actually super abusive and Thor was too and Loki was just terribly abused and he's such a woobie really. :(

Nothing makes me back button harder in MCU fic than Thor abusing Loki. Not fighting him because he had to fight him, or fighting because they are brothers and sometimes brothers fight, but beating him and mentally/emotionally abusing him because Thor is mean to poor baby Loki. I've stopped reading many a fic because of that.

I hate that too. Like, Thor being a little overbearing, I can see, and I can even see some bullying (but I personally feel like Loki gave as good as he got, but in different ways) but abuse? Nope.

Odin is sort of an asshole though. And by sort of, I mean a lot. Odin is an asshole to both his sons.

Oh, yeah, I can see that, and I don't mind it when it's acknowledged that he was an asshole to both of his sons, but some of the abusive!Odin cliches (especially when they use things that are not canon in the movies to justify it) are just too much for me to take seriously.

Ugh, man I dislike that fanon so much. Granted Thor 2 Odin is a much bigger dick this time around, but I still wont buy that he was super abusive to Loki. But I really cannot with the abusive Thor BS, I'm personally of the opinion that they were both butts to eat other at times because that's what siblings do.

Yes! I mean, that's what me and my brothers do, it's just the way siblings are IMO. (And honestly, I personally would find the idea of siblings who never got on each others nerves to be a little creepy. Maybe it happens in real life, I don't know, but in fiction I wouldn't be able to take it seriously at all.)

Yup, agreed. Even if they never had the problems that they do and had an otherwise healthy and loving relationship I couldn't imagine them never fighting, it seems too unlikely.

Right? It would seem plastic, and fake, which is a good fiction prompt if you're not trying to portray realistic siblings, but not when we're supposed to see them as siblings, and feel bad that things went sour. :/

100% this, that is so OOC I just can't with it. I mostly stay away from the MCU fandom anyway (other than reading a little fic here and there, and reblogging stuff that shows up on my tumblr dash) so I don't see it as much, but it annoys me.

I remember seeing Thor for the first time and thinking, "SHIT, I NEED FIC NOW; THERE HAS TO BE A FANDOM!", going home, looking at said fandom, and saying, "Nope, I don't need to do that again."

Yes, this! I just got back from watching Thor today and jumped on AO3 and then immediately jumped right the fuck back off. It's disappointing. :<

Ugh, it sucks because I know when I see the film I'll want new fic so badly, but I also know that fandom is going to keep doing all the things I hate and I'm going to be disappointed yet again, and it probably isn't worth the effort. *sigh*

Maybe we can ask for fic at the next f!s fic rec thread.

I tend to avoid Thor fandom, mostly because as much as I love the fantasy aesthetic, I prefer to think of MCU!Asgardians as super advanced aliens whose science just looks like magic to us, while fandom typically runs straight back into fantasy, actual gods, and magic. The characterization sealed the deal of just not stepping directly into the fandom at all.

But I saw Thor 2 yesterday, so now I really want to read some Thor fic. The movie treated the Asgardians as more like my headcanon than being actual magic and gods like in the comic books, so I'm kind of slowly dipping my toes back into the fandom to see if there's anything interesting this time around...

Does anyone have recs for MCU Thor fics that approach all their characterizations in a nuanced, or at least reasonable, manner?
