Rapist Elves in LotR fics.

ARGH! NO! JUST NO!

Tolkien himself said that if an elf got raped, their soul flees their body and goes to Mandos - i.e. They die.
An Elf who commits rape? Might as well be an orc, that's how bad it is.

I just wish more people writing elf-rape prompts on the Kink Meme would remember this, especially if the rapist elf is one of the big name characters, like Thranduil, or if it's a random no-name OC, if and when it's found out, they get punished, and severely. Like death penalty.

That's... one of the most bizarre bits of world building I've ever seen. Is it expanded upon? I can see how it would be irritating if people ignored it, I mean, you have a great opportunity to explore a culture with a much different concept of rape, and then you just... do what every other canon does...

The nearest Tolkien ever came to anything near rape was Eöl's marriage to Aredhel Ar-Feiniel, which comes off as being very stalkerish and probably a huge case of Stockholm Syndrome going on.

I don't know where that little fact came up, probably somewhere in the letters or other extra materials I've not read (considering that even with the books of HoME I do have, I haven't read any of them right through).

I honestly don't expect prompters to stop writing rape prompts, and one spot that often gets it at the moment is Mirkwood, so the Elf-rape prompts keep happening.

I remember this from my elfslash days. Why is it such a Thing in fandom?? It was like at the point where almost every fic I opened had it, whether it was warned or not.

Yeah, I remember my own days back then (2004).

It's either that factoid is not hugely well-known, or a lot of writers just don't give a shit, and like some of the stricter aspects of marriage standards in LotR, ignore it because it's inconvenient to the fic they want to write.

not in that fandom, but you make it sound like it was something that was said in extra material or an interview rather than the books themselves, and a lot of people don't give a fuck about that sort of thing

Yeah, there's a lot of extra material, much of it put together by Christopher Tolkien in the History of Middle Earth books.

It went around pretty well in the height of the LotR days, when Elfslash was huge.

But no, I agree with you that it is likely even those who know of it don't give a shit anyway. Tolkien's standards for marriage and monogamy are pretty strict by today's standards and people happily ignore a lot of that as well.

It doesn't stop me from find it annoying when I see prompts and/or fics where Elves are either committing rape or suffering it and staying alive. It's like an irritating itch that pops up every so often.
