I swear under exactly one condition: That I'm quoting someone or something. Not because I think it's terrible or something, but I do think using the same "shocking" (except not, when you've hear them every five minutes since you were in third grade) language constantly is incredibly boring. When people use the words creatively, it's kind of fun, but just throwing them out the same old way is dull. Not to mention, my mom DOES think that cussing is a sin (except if you read that part of the Bible in context, to "swear" is referring to taking oaths, but that's my mom for you), and I have younger siblings, so it's easier to just not swear at all rather than swear when I'm not around certain people and then have to switch to watching my mouth during the fairly rare moments where they ARE around.

Which means a lot of people have never heard me swear. So the other night I did "I'm On A Boat" at karaoke (very enthusiastically, of course!), and a friend I've had for close to twenty years happened to be present and was like "...Wow. That was more than I have heard you swear in all the time I've known you."

Your mom's like my mom (who has no idea what a dirty mouth I can have) and I agree about that Bible verse in context.

When anyone asks, I tell them, "I see it as against taking the Lord's name in vain or taking oaths lightly, nothing in there about words involving copulation or excrement." because it confuses people that I don't say "goddammit" or whatever but I will say "well fuck me gently with a chainsaw"
