Is not swearing really that weird?

[personal profile] vethica 2013-11-10 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for resurrecting this topic, but I was late to it yesterday and I got really self-conscious, so I had to ask. Do you think it is weird if someone doesn't swear? Does it make then seem uptight? :\

Nah. Many of my friends don't swear. I don't swear around most people (definitely no children), either.

I don't at all. I'm not sure who said that, but I like it when people don't overuse swearing and can express themselves without adding "fuck" every other word.

I'm sure it's a cultural/regional/whatever thing, where some people's areas just use a lot more swearing than others. But I don't know, I think it's more refined to avoid it, or save swearing for the best occasions so it's more meaningful (be it expressing frustration or awesome comic relief).

I don't necessarily think it makes someone uptight, I just wonder personally what they yell when they stub their toe. There's nothing like a good 'FUCK!' to make yourself feel a bit better after it.

I curse like a sailor around people I knew pretty well, but I don't know if I'd even notice if someone else didn't.

Re: Is not swearing really that weird?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No? It's hard to believe anybody would pay attention enough to anyone else's speech to notice unless the person is making a big deal out of their non-swearingness by like pointedly correcting themselves by repeating "oops I mean, darn" after saying "damn" or something

At most they sound a bit old fashioned. Unless they keep calling attention to it. Then they're obnoxious

Re: Is not swearing really that weird?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not at all, I wouldn't even notice if someone didn't swear. It's not weird.

Some people who are actively anti-swearing come off as a little uptight sometimes. But there's no reason to get self-conscious about not swearing.

I probably wouldn't notice unless they were actively policing other people's language and acting like they were better than people who do swear. That would make them uptight, but simply not using the words themselves wouldn't.

Re: Is not swearing really that weird?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-10 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
nah, it's cool. the only time I roll my eyes is when someone hears a swear and acts like they're completely scandalized and had never heard the word before (if they have children with them then I guess I can understand but otherwise come on)

Re: Is not swearing really that weird?

I didn't see the thread last night but I only notice if non-swearers make a big deal over swear words being this huge thing or harass other people for swearing or use cutesy swear words or say "bleep" or "beeping" constantly.

If you're substituting something for a curse word you do not have the moral high ground, do it all you want but don't pretend it's all that different. It's not the particular combination of letters that make a swear word offensive.

If you someone didn't make a big deal about not swearing I probably wouldn't even notice to be honest.

Now what really gets me is people who just swear constantly, to no effect. They aren't cool or intimidating they just sound uneducated and uncreative. Plus way to strip cursing of its intent and effect.

I swear under exactly one condition: That I'm quoting someone or something. Not because I think it's terrible or something, but I do think using the same "shocking" (except not, when you've hear them every five minutes since you were in third grade) language constantly is incredibly boring. When people use the words creatively, it's kind of fun, but just throwing them out the same old way is dull. Not to mention, my mom DOES think that cussing is a sin (except if you read that part of the Bible in context, to "swear" is referring to taking oaths, but that's my mom for you), and I have younger siblings, so it's easier to just not swear at all rather than swear when I'm not around certain people and then have to switch to watching my mouth during the fairly rare moments where they ARE around.

Which means a lot of people have never heard me swear. So the other night I did "I'm On A Boat" at karaoke (very enthusiastically, of course!), and a friend I've had for close to twenty years happened to be present and was like "...Wow. That was more than I have heard you swear in all the time I've known you."

I personally don't think it's weird, but people thought it was weird when I didn't swear much in high school.

Oh, I think it might have been my comment in part that made you feel that way.

To clarify, I don't think it's weird if a person doesn't swear, but when someone uses a lot of swear substitutes instead of actually cursing it comes off as pretty uptight to me.

No, I don't, and I personally think it's a good habit to get into (if you do swear), that way, if you're ever in a situation where swearing would be a really bad thing (you're around children that aren't your own), you're not swearing just because it's what you're used to.

Nah, I don't even really notice if someone doesn't swear.

Unless they're stuck-up about it and mention it constantly. But that's about being a condescending jerk and not a non-swearer.

I see them as 'innocent'-ish and try not to swear or talk about sex around them because I don't want to offend them.

I swear when it's appropriate. (Simon Tam.)

Seriously though, I don't think so. I try to be careful, because I actually CAN let out a good bit of foul - but not everyone wants or needs to hear it.

The only thing I do get annoyed with is when some people act like not cursing makes them better. What grade are you in, anyway? But then, when people act like cursing makes them more adult than people who don't curse, I ask the same question.

This is only sort of relevant but I have a friend who never swore in high school or college. Then she went to seminary and came back with a filthy mouth.

no. to me, swearing is a bad habit, so if I encounter someone who doesn't swear I actually respect them and try to adjust my language accordingly. I wish I was able to stop swearing.

I've never noticed how much people swear unless every other word is fuck or something, and I don't really care how much someone does or doesn't either.

i'd be surprised if they didn't swear when they dropped something on a toe but aside from that I don't care how much or little a person swears (except work and even that depends on the workplace)

That said I think I have it around the other way, I assume uptight people don't swear and get surprised if they do.

Subconscious stereotype I guess

Not really? I doubt I'd notice it unless they specifically called it to my attention. Like:

Nope. I swear a shit ton, but don't notice how frequently others do or don't. Nor do I think them as prudes or anything, just more polite than me. ;)
