I'm not American, but... what are the other options? To me both Hotmail and yahoo seem very dated and convey that you're not "current" or whatever. Not that I care about being current, but it seems to be a thing that matters to a lot of employers. And anything "off the beaten track" makes people ask questions.

I guess the other option is emails affiliated with a university or company, but I don't have one...

Yahoo (hotmail is not really big here) and some other providers (but they are regional) seems not dated here (yet?) and employers won't raise a eyebrow if you use them.

Probably because google is considered more negative here.
It certainly doesn't make you look more professional for an future employer if you use gmail. (As long as you send your CV, documents, etc. from a "normal" e-mail account, like "givenname.surename@xxx" and not from something like "fantasylover123@xxx" everything is fine)

And now I really hope this will stay this way here for us, I don't want gmail. :(

I had lots of secondhand embarassment to suffer through at the start of my first university semester when one of the professors strongly suggested in the second week (after everyone had to add their e-mail adresses to the contact list the week before) that a lot of people should maybe think about getting a secondary e-mail account for university because a lot of the names were incredibly inappropriate.

Yeah, "yourname@yahoo.com" seems dated, so I use Yahoo Mail under their moniker "ymail" (as in "yourname@ymail.com") and aside from the risk of people mistaking that Y for a G, it's a pretty cool alternative.
