I noticed something that bothered me

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
A friend of a friend of mine showed me a list of infamous people on ED that they thought was hilarious. they pointed out to me that a lot of them had 'autism" (which again they thought was hilarious :<) . I read it, and I probably shouldn't have because it made me feel bad. I know some people with the disorder (and I have it mildly) who are very close to me and very sweet people. Seeing that person regard them as a joke bothered me.

i don't think autism really explains what's wrong with people like chris-chan though

He's just a brat that never got told "no" when he really was a kid and has never been allowed to grow up. He'll probably end up running a motel somewhere in the hinterland with the "help" of his mother.

Encyclopedia-dramatica-the internet seen through the eyes of 4chan.

Thanks. All I could think of was "Eating Disorder" or "Erectile Dysfunction" and neither worked.

Erectile Dysfunction.

Or Encyclopedia Dramatica. Same thing.

That person was reading a website that is positively dinosauric by this point. The fact that they take it seriously or think it's at all relevant makes THEM a joke tbh

Here's the thing.

The people on there who have autism are people who have autism and decide they don't even have to try. They think the world OWES them something or their diagnosis shields them from any crit ever. They act like any kind of help is an attack , they don't learn from what people try to teach them. They refuse to change. They're leaning on that crutch so hard it's about to snap.

Believe me , dude, I have AS myself but my mom brought me up to believe it wasn't an excuse. My Mom wouldn't have taken any of that "woe is me / stop attacking me" bullshit. Asperger's syndrome is not an excuse, and it doesn't make you act like those people. Asperger's makes you have to work harder to learn social stuff. It doesn't make you an exception.

As long as you let people help you and learn from mistakes , you'll do fine. :3

You're on ED

Everyone on there is accused of autism, be it accurate or not. Hyperbole is the point

ED is completely awful.

And not in the 'hurr all 4channers are trolls!', but in a petty vindictive and bullying way that's just entirely lacking in any real intelligence or humour.

They're the kid who got beat up everyday and decided to look for the smallest kid he could find to terrorise.

They're also about as relevant in today's post-Reddit world as Al Gore.

This. I think I read somewhere that it wasn't even originally meant to be that way; it just spiraled out of control, as many of those sites do.

I bet it did. When you have an echoing chamber of nastiness, like say if you're hanging out with friends that like to say shit about people for example, it will just keep getting worse until someone steps in.

Reminds me of a Harry Potter fan forum I was on. They had a venting thread where people could vent about characters, pairings or what have you that they hated. The rules forbade any kind of defense of that object of hate. A thread venting about interview comments (post epilogue canon) turned into a roast of JK Rowling as a person including some very misogynistic remarks about how "slutty" she was.

That being said, the page for "anarchy" was perfect before they cleaned it up.

AYRT

Sounds vaguely familiar... wonder if it was the forum I was on?

And yeah, you're absolutely right. It's like Godawful Fan Fiction, which changed names a few times - not sure if it's still around, but it started out as a fairly intelligent commentary on good vs bad fanfiction, spread into broader pop culture references, but then became overrun with trolls. Sad.

Possibly, I went there a lot. Good old FA. I actually haven't run into many people who still remember it, I'm impressed!

Does ED even get updated anymore? I know the PT article is extremely out of date.
