ED is completely awful.

And not in the 'hurr all 4channers are trolls!', but in a petty vindictive and bullying way that's just entirely lacking in any real intelligence or humour.

They're the kid who got beat up everyday and decided to look for the smallest kid he could find to terrorise.

This. I think I read somewhere that it wasn't even originally meant to be that way; it just spiraled out of control, as many of those sites do.

I bet it did. When you have an echoing chamber of nastiness, like say if you're hanging out with friends that like to say shit about people for example, it will just keep getting worse until someone steps in.

Reminds me of a Harry Potter fan forum I was on. They had a venting thread where people could vent about characters, pairings or what have you that they hated. The rules forbade any kind of defense of that object of hate. A thread venting about interview comments (post epilogue canon) turned into a roast of JK Rowling as a person including some very misogynistic remarks about how "slutty" she was.

That being said, the page for "anarchy" was perfect before they cleaned it up.

Sounds vaguely familiar... wonder if it was the forum I was on?

And yeah, you're absolutely right. It's like Godawful Fan Fiction, which changed names a few times - not sure if it's still around, but it started out as a fairly intelligent commentary on good vs bad fanfiction, spread into broader pop culture references, but then became overrun with trolls. Sad.

Possibly, I went there a lot. Good old FA. I actually haven't run into many people who still remember it, I'm impressed!

It's kinda hard to forget. Especially when at the same time as that JKR hate thread I made a joke in the "Cant Stand Snape/Neville" thread that "some people will ship anything."

I got a mod warning for..basically something like "shipper hate speech or whatever" basically "STOP BEING MEAN TO SHIPPERS". when it was obviously said in JEST. (with a 'lol' and everything)

"so you can call JKR a horrible slut, but the moment you insult shippers it's serious business? Fuck this shit I'm done"

Oh, the double standards were gold, weren't they? I actually got quite mouthy, and looking back I was lucky that didn't end badly, because apparently some people at that site could make your fandom life miserable if they felt like it. I'll admit sometimes I miss their strictness though - I'll go to boards where people use netspeak and post one liner threads, and I realize how in a way FAP spoiled me, as much as I complained about it (and ultimately left, though I still step in now and then, but it's basically new posters having the same arguments we had all those years back).
