I hate those arguments that making a character a woman/black/some minority would make them automatically better. How? I can't think of a single reason. Maybe it would give you someone to identify with or more representation, but it doesn't mean that they'd be instantly better.

Personally I have managed to find at least one female character that I've liked in almost every show and movie that I've watched (except Supernatural and that's only because all my favorites got killed off).

I don't think I've ever found a canon that didn't have at least one female character I liked, usually more. There are plenty of good female characters out there and they're not that hard to find, either.

Depending on the character archetype or the story being told, I think having a woman or minority fill the role instead could be better because it's ground less often tread.
