Did you ever consider that maybe the people that gush over male-led shows and the people who would prefer more female-led shows are not one and the same?

Xena was the last decent female lead show that I can think of. I can't really think of any more recent shows off the top of my head that people could be ignoring like you say.

I agree that some people is just repeating politically correct comments that they don't really mean. But I don't think it's always a pose. Orange is the new Black is a great show full of female characters and people are really enjoying it (and shipping the inmates). In the Sleepy Hollows fandom, Ichabod/Abbie is the main pairing. There are people shipping Rick or Daryl and Michonne in The Walking Dead. And I know I wasn't the only one shipping Wes and Travis in Common Law.

Examples of female led shows with decent sized fandoms-
Buffy
OUAT
Sailor Moon

... and I can't think of any others.

I find it really sad that only one of these is current.

What? TV and movies are chock full of awesome charismatic male protags and every time I see one I just wish I could sometime have the same thing with a woman instead.
Just because you don't care about this doesn't make MY wishes any less honest and legitimate, jfc.

Why does this complaint always end up going to extremes? We have some interesting canons with lead female characters in every medium (TV shows, movies, anime/manga, comics, books, etc.), and if you name a usually-male archetype I can find you a female character that fits it, but it'd also be fantastic to have more than just that one female character with a personality and role I like, and especially the variety of relationships between women that relationships between men can take.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I hate those arguments that making a character a woman/black/some minority would make them automatically better. How? I can't think of a single reason. Maybe it would give you someone to identify with or more representation, but it doesn't mean that they'd be instantly better.

Personally I have managed to find at least one female character that I've liked in almost every show and movie that I've watched (except Supernatural and that's only because all my favorites got killed off).

+1

I wonder if more people maybe have that discrepancy that I have. As a consumer, I love a lot of entertainment centered around women - seconding AHS and Girls, and then there's also Orphan Black (which is excellent) and Orange Is The New Black. There's female-led comedies like Parks And Recreation and 30 Rock (finished, but extremely re-watchable), the women on Community and Brooklyn Nine Nine are frequently great, and I also watch Game Of Thrones mostly for the women. I love and support these shows.

However, I'm also a M/M slash fan, so in fandom, I'm all about the dick touching (though they don't need to be white). I think what people squee over doesn't always reflect everything they like in their entertainment.

It doesn't help that a lot of shows with female leads are poorly written or about things I don't care about.

At least guys get enough lead roles so that they are more likely to be on shows that have good writing and a premise I like. That's honestly where the problem lies. The men don't have to leave or be gender swapped. I just need more opportunities to see women in shows I like that aren't shit.

While okay some people are probably bullshitting, in big fandom like Doctor Who/Sherlock/Supernatural, those that are indeed interested mainly in the female and POC characters are probably drown in the masses of other fanworks being done.

Then there's the fact that some people don't always do stuff for the big big fandoms ? Like 80~90% of the fanarts I draw has female characters in it but I mostly draw stuff for anime fandoms because that's what inspires me.

[personal profile] kryptoncat 2013-11-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
But I am supporting a show with female and POC leads. It's called Steven Universe.

Also, you think some of these people might be actual women and POC who want to see more than just guys and white people doing the cool things? They may still squee over the white guys who already exist, but that doesn't mean they are not checking out new characters and shows who represent different walks of life.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I can relate to this some. As I love female characters, and so much of the time they are ignored or even bashed by people who are lauding the male characters. I can name so many series where fans pretty much think the guys can do no wrong, but the girls are boring or annoying or whatever. I really do wish there were more shows out there with female leads/with the majority of the cast being female, and that those shows would get the fan attention that shows with male leads get.

I'd legitimately prefer shows where the leads were women. I don't care about shows without at least one main female character (she doesn't have to be protagonist, just there). One of the reasons that I'm a big Once Upon a Time fan is because it features badass ladies. My favorite characters in things are almost always the female characters.

People can have different opinions.

So, the OP's premise is that people *claim* to want more female characters, but they actually don't?

Well, I know it's considered a very taboo opinion, but I *don't* want them. I'm female, and I actively prefer shows/movies with an all-male or mostly-male cast. I don't give a crap about the Bechdel Test.

I'm not self-loathing and I don't think women are "icky", nor am I hardcore fan of m/m slash. I'm just sort of tomboyish in my entertainment preferences, I guess. I relate to male characters. I find them entertaining. I do not relate to the majority of female characters and I do not find them entertaining.

I just *completely* cannot relate to a statement like "This shows needs some strong, fierce, kick-ass, hilarious, sassy women!" Um, no, it doesn't.

Also, I'm a straight woman, and I enjoy looking at men, even if they're not conventionally handsome. A cast full of women is not a draw, to me.

My fave female TV character is Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine, and she's entertaining because she's selfish, hostile, and crazy: hardly a shining example of a heroic or admirable female role-model for girls to look up to and emulate.
