To the people in this thread complaining about the lack of female-led TV shows

(Anonymous) 2013-11-12 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Or the lack of variety, these are all currently airing:

Shows where the lead character(s) is(are) female:
The Good Wife (legal drama)
Grey’s Anatomy (medical soap)
Scandal (political soap)
Revenge (revenge mystery soap)
Rizzoli and Isles (police procedural)
Haven (sci-fi/mystery/horror)
Covert Affairs (spy drama)
Necessary Roughness (sports therapy drama)
Mom (family sit-com)
Two Broke Girls (workplace sit-com)
The Mindy Project (workplace sit-com)
Once Upon a Time (fantasy drama)
True Blood (supernatural soap)
Nikita (spy drama)
American Horror Story: Coven (supernatural horror)
Orange is the New Black (prison dramedy)
Trophy Wife (family sit-com)
Super Fun Night (friend sit-com)
Nashville (music drama)
Orphan Black (sci-fi drama)
Reign (historical soap)
Veep (political comedy)
The Carrie Diaries (teen drama)

Shows with both a male and female lead character:
Castle (mystery/police procedural)
Sleepy Hollow (supernatural drama)
Bones (forensic procedural)
Elementary (detective/police procedural)
Warehouse 13 (sci-fi procedural)
Law and Order: SVU (police procedural)
Homeland (spy drama)
Hostages (political thriller)
Mike & Molly (relationship sit-com)
The Americans (spy drama)

Plus there are several ensemble shows or shows with frequent shifts in character focus that have female characters as a significant part of them like Parenthood, Modern Family, Parks and Rec., Agents of SHIELD, New Girl, etc. And there are other shows I’m sure I’ve forgotten.

Thanks for listing the genres there, do you have anymore scifi ones? I've seen Orphan Black (and eagerly wait the next season), Haven I am googling and Coven is already on my watch list as soon as I finish Asylum.

...Are there any others? :/ Because otherwise the list is still tiny, especially if people have preferred genres. There is a large lack.

Continuum is sci-fi with a female lead.

Well, there honestly aren't that many currently airing sci-fi shows, but I really would recommend Warehouse 13. Agents of SHIELD is ensemble, but there is a fair amount of dealing with alien tech.

If you don't mind shows which aren't airing anymore, but are still fairly recent, there's Fringe (which finished it's run in January), though I would skip the last season.

Upcoming:
There's Resurrection, a show about previously dead persons who come back to life looking exactly as they did when they died. On August 4, 2013, it was announced that the series will premiere Sunday, March 9, 2014. Omar Epps is first billed, but I don't know if it's because he's lead or just best known.

Extant is a science fiction drama television series that will air on CBS. It revolves around a female astronaut (Halle Berry) who returns home to her family after a year in outer space. The series is expected to debut in summer 2014.

Believe is a science fiction/fantasy/adventure series due to be broadcast as part of the 2013–14 United States network television schedule on NBC as a mid-season entry. The series follows a young girl who was born with special abilities that even she cannot control, and as they start evolving, the people who are protecting her must turn to an outsider. This leads them to a wrongfully convicted death-row inmate whom they break out of prison. Although he is reluctant to take on the role as her protector, the two eventually form a bond that will guide them to helping others as well as each other while staying one step ahead of the evil forces that want the girl.

That's a handy list. I should bookmark this comment for the next time someone says there are no female-lead shows out there. (Not that it matters, they'll just keep moving the goal posts and find reasons these don't count.)

Ha, I actually was just about to comment to the big list to say that Haven might not be the best pick for someone wanting good female representation in TV shows. Audrey Parker's great and the show does really well by her, but I am this close to ragequitting the show anyway due to its habit of killing, mindwiping, and/or sending away its other female characters. Audrey's literally the only female character who's managed to stick around for all four seasons of the show, rather than the one or two seasons every other recurring female character has gotten. (Compare to the four male characters who've been there for all four seasons and the two male characters who've been there for three seasons.)

Yeah Haven is bad for that. :(. I don't understand why either. Why can't they have a regular supporting female character? I'm not going to quit the show, but it's frustrating. Eleanor and other Audrey were bad enough, but then there was Evi, and Claire was just maddening. Stop getting rid of your supporting female characters, show.

And where are the fandoms for the vast majority of these shows? I love at least half the shows on your list (a couple of which I would consider favorite shows) and there is not that much out there. (I gave up on OUaT due to the writing quality. And I don't watch comedies, so those might have fandoms I am unaware of.) Which, I guess, proves the OP's point somewhat. There are shows out there, but they don't have as large fandoms, generally, as the male led shows. Like I adore Elementary. It has five times more episodes than Sherlock, but a fraction of the fandom. (Even though I am happy for what fandom there is, don't get me wrong.)

I don't know, but the shows exist, so if there aren't big fandoms, maybe the fans need to be more proactive. I do watch several of these shows (plus a few others), but I'm generally only in the fandom of one or two shows at a time.
